Question about engine hoist - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am in the process of a engine swap and was wondering if a 1 ton engine hoist is sufficient enough to remove and install a V8 small block? Anyone use the harbor freight hoist shown below?........thanks rick

I was looking at those too, and I would think they would be fine - your motor doesn't weigh near anywhere a ton.

I have one very similar to that. I've used it many, many times. You will be fine.

I got a similar one from Sam's Club. IIRC it was $170 out the door. no shipping or any extra costs. I made a longer boom for it and hung a full dressed BBC for a TopKick into place with not a single problem.

I've got one like that from harbor freight, but mine is a 2 ton. As the boom is extended the capacity decreases. I was on the third hole when I changed the motor in my c20 and the capacitywas down to 1000lbs. You might want to check this before you buy.

i've got the 2 ton as well, and was about to type the same thing don did : ) with a truck you've gotta extend it pretty far, and, better safe than sorry : )

small block plus tranny is less than 1000lbs.

They work good, only problem I've encountered is after sitting unused the cylinder starts to leak, also had one cylinder go bad, however a quality cylinder can be picked up cheap at any farm store.

A word of advice get the 2 ton or atleast when you go to remove your motor, remove the hood or go simple and remove the front clip really easy and quick. only like 10 bolts. do a search in the FAQ and you can see how it is done in detail

i've seen more than a few posts about the cheapass harbor freight stuff buckleing under load with tools you generally get what you pay for

I also have a 2 ton. I had to have it on the last bolt to get the boom far enough out to pull my V6 and lay it on a trailer. At full extension...my 2ton crane is down to 1/2 ton. So a 1ton would be down to 1/4 ton at full extension...which you need if you have to go deep in or up high over something.

there was a thread here a couple years ago about someone's cheap hoist bending under small load. there were pics showing what to look out for when shopping for a hoist. IIRC it was purchased from Pep Boys if that helps for the search.

Look around just a bit more - I have one that looks just like that one but red and 2 ton - if you look around, you can also find that one with the load leveler included. I think I got mine at northern tool - about $175 - largest lift was a fully dressed 318 - fully extended, no problems..(on CONCRETE)

Also keep an eye out for sale flyyer from HF. I just bought thier 2 ton folding hoist for $147 plus had a 15% off coupon...then a buddy went in for half with me

doesnt matter any ways. you will most likely have to extend it all the way out to reach the engine which on a 2 is still 1/2 ton.

Mine came with the leveler deal. I got it at Northern Tool for under $200 with tax.
The leveler is a worm gear deal that will balance your engine or tip it while it is hanging.

That portable unit looks just like mine, we've swapped a few motors and have moved my cab a few times with it

I got that exact one for my project, I would even pull a big block with it. Didn't have any problems......

You should check any local tool stores. I got a 2 ton about 9 years ago and don't use it often. I believe it is Larin brand and it has never leaked. Spring for the leveler if it isn't included. It's well worth it because trying to muscle an engine to mate to a tranny isn't fun.
