Mufflers for the 250cid Six banger?
I just bought the clifford split headers, offenhauser intake, and a Holley 390cfm Carb. Now I'm getting ready to buy mufflers. In your opinion what is the best muffler to go with for both sound and performance with my split headers?
Thanks. |

Re: Mufflers for the 250cid Six banger?
Were you planning on a dual system or a single pipe?
How loud do you want it? I think best performance and sound will be with a single 2.5" system. The muffler depends on the type of sound you want. Last edited by Texasdeere; 10-03-2007 at 03:02 PM. |

Re: Mufflers for the 250cid Six banger?
I think it would be best to run duals. The header is split; cylinders 1-3 out of the first collector and cylinders 4-6 out of the second. I've heard people talk about the unique sound of a "split six" so I want to go for that. As far as noise level, I want it to be fairly loud. What are some of you other straight six guys using for mufflers?

Re: Mufflers for the 250cid Six banger?
I worked PT at a muffler and brake shop for 3 years. I would run everything out 2
where the mufflers are going to be. Use a couple of stands and a few rags. Get a person up in your truck. Have them hold up different mufflers that are available & use the rags to rap around the front connection. We did this on GQ, I went from wanting Flowmasters to buying Magnaflows* without even blinking. A GOOD SHOP is willing to do this, most shops won't bother unboxing 2 of each. Make sure they goose it a few times on each to hear the different sound levels. Hope this helps *I have Magnaflows on GQ, but MERLOT will have Borlas

I vote for a pair of the old time Smittys mufflers or just a pair of store bought glass packs with 2 1/4" pipes all the way out the back. Yeah, it'll talk to ya.

Re: Mufflers for the 250cid Six banger?
I'm running a pair of Summit Racing welded mufflers (Summit part# 633222) through 2 1/2" pipes in/out.
They are reasonable at idle but when you rev it up they are a bit louder than what I wanted. Sound good though.....almost like a WW II fighter plane. This is on a 292....I imagine they would be similar on a 250.

Re: Mufflers for the 250cid Six banger?
i say glasspacks, especially with the split six sound.
it works out so that the firing order has a cylinder firing in the alternating pipe. 1-5-3-6-2-4. so, front-back-front-back-front-back. hense. that lovely sound known as split six. . should be a snappy engine. and i stand by the 'packs for it. -Sam.

I vote for Smithys, I heard them on a 216 Chevy that had cast-iron headers and dual 1-barrels. It was the sweetest sound I've ever heard.

Re: Mufflers for the 250cid Six banger?
12 inch glasspacks, turned backwards, as close as possible to the collectors, 1 3/4 inch tailpipes as straight as possible out the back. that S.O.B. will rattle windows for 3 blocks. this is if you want it LOUD.
a pair of longer glasspacks farther back with 2 inch tailpipes will be nice and mellow. been in the same muffler shop almost 23 years now and done several old chevys with split 6's, the first way is loud enough to draw attention from every cop in town

Re: Mufflers for the 250cid Six banger?
I heard a split 6 header on a 250 with dual chambered muffler like what came on 69 Z28's, and it sounded wicked. You can get these here:

Re: Mufflers for the 250cid Six banger?
I'm running a thrush turbo on mine, It had one of those bargin 18" glass-packs on it when I got it and it sounded like a vacumn cleaner on steriods. The turbo gives it a nice throaty sound.
