PS Gearbox Rebuild
I searched through the forum and didn't find a post specific to this so:
I have a 72 PS gearbox that leaks from the input shaft. I bought the reseal kit from napa but don't see how this is all supposed to come apart. Any hints (or exploded drawings) that could help me? TIA |

Re: PS Gearbox Rebuild
I replaced that seal on mine many years ago and don't remember exactly but I think the outside of the piece holding the seal is a big hex. You unscrew that piece and you can replace the seal from the back side. Just make sure that nothing else unscrews with that piece. The inner guts of mine were kind of stuck to that piece and unscrewed with it and a whole bunch of little ball bearings fell out. If that happens you have to get some heavy grease to hold them in the groove to put it back together. The some of the ball bearings are black and some silver and when you reinstall them you have to alternate them. I didn't find this out untill after I had put everything back together and had to take it apart and do it again.

Re: PS Gearbox Rebuild
Not sure about anyone else having trouble doing this, but I sure did...
Many years ago I tried to fix the leak on one of my p.s. gearboxes and wound up screwing it up. I don't know how I screwed it up, but it would lock up when turning the steering wheel. Kind of dangerous because I couldn't straighten it up easily. Be very careful. If you do try it, keep notes (or pics) so you can post some them in here. I notice mine is starting to leak on one of my trucks. Last edited by 68gmsee; 10-04-2007 at 01:54 PM. Reason: spelling |
