Chev with 71 Olds rocket 350
I drove a 73(different style I know) today and I couldn't believe how much better that engine runs than my 350 chev....and mine runs great!......I know a Chev 350 is great but this was out of site performance and power.......he even pulls a 5th wheel with it and has no problems with the hills and mountains what so ever.....and this is a stock olds with only the carb, intake and air filter that are non-stock....I can't wait to put a 69 olds engine(rebuilt block laying around) in my truck.....anywaysI just couldn't believe the ponys I had up the hills and the response and smoothness it had.....man....anyone else used one of these in their truck besides the 455 olds?

I have a 67 Olds 400 in my 67 shortbed. Even though its a BB it performs more like a Olds 350 than a 455. 455s make alot of torque but dont like to spin much faster then 5500 rpms while the 330 and 350 SBs and the 400 and 425 BBs make alot of top end power and dont mind mind spinning well past 6k rpms. 455s are a great swap for a truck but theres nothing like having a engine that really comes alive above 5k rpms. Olds engines may cost more to build but you get alot of power for the dollar.

Bigger is better! I ran a 455 in the longhorn for a while,you didnt want to punch passing gear under 30mph......it was a little squirley! that bugger was a powerhouse,i could tach it to 6800 in 2nd, then pull high & rip the hides loose & smoke em( thats one of them "damn I hope this b!tch goes straight" times). She wasnt stock tho, specs were +.030 trws, decked , balanced,steel crank, C castings with 2.o72/1.71 valves,3 angle, bowl work & port match,trimmed egr bumps,Engal cam .496/.512 lift, torker intake/800dp holley...........Crazy AL

rockets rock!!!!!!.......i've got a 320 hp 330 in my convertible, and am still in the process of installing a 350 in my 49 F#rd....they both make plenty of power and I love the way the make it......the 330 has peak horse advertised at 5200 rpm....but it hasn't seen 5000 since the overhaul......and it's broken 1 transmission case and now the rear end is shot.......hehe

hey Oldblue.......that 330 sounds like it would be a fun engine.....you might want to try it.....I'm gonna put the rocket 350 in mine.....I just need to make sure my tranny and rear end can handle the power of a Olds engine.....plus the rocket engines are known to have blocks made from high nickle content which means only 2 bolts on the main are needed as compared to the chevs which require 4 bolts because they are low in nickle and need the extra strength....plus weight is also dumped at the same time when changing to a Olds......

Bigger is still more fun. That 455 rocket will be kicken about 500ft lbs of tork not too far above idle! Too many guys get caught up in the hp theory.........on the street, tork is what its all about! I look at a 461 inch olds,& a 383 Chev that both have run in my longhorn, they both put out about the same as far as hp, & the Chev winds up quicker.......... but it dont have the grunt that the big butt Olds had.........once you get a" taste"of a big block, it will be with you forever! Cube for cube, it doesnt matter.......ferd ,chev, olds dodge,caddy,buick the are all competative......more cubes will "tip the cards"

dmec, Id stay away from em. Theyre low compression low hp engines. The fuel injection system is a out dated batch-fire MPFI system that has practically no tuneability to keep up w/ a high hp engine. I used to want to use just the intake for a aftermarket EFI set-up on a Olds SB, but its not even good for that, tiny runners and a 2 barrel size throttle body mounting boss.
