Upholstery Kits in Fawn or Sandalwood?

Does anybody make a 67/68 buddy bucket seat upholstery kit and CST door panel covers in fawn or sandalwood? I've never seen them, but I was wondering if anybody has special ordered them. My truck is fawn on the interior. I'd like to stay with that, or go to more of a sandalwood color, which I know they didn't have originally in 67-68. Parchment is too white for me and saddle is too dark. Looking for something in between. I could probably have them made by a local upholstery shop, but I'd like to just buy a kit, if I could.

Re: Upholstery Kits in Fawn or Sandalwood?

As far as I know, there weren't any seats in sandalwood. The dash pad, steering wheel & column could be sandalwood, but it was usually paired with another color for the seats and door panels. Not sure about the sun visors.

My 72 has sandalwood/parchment combo and the parchment is off-white.

Re: Upholstery Kits in Fawn or Sandalwood?

I know Classic Industries carries the upholstery kits in Sandalwood for 69-72 buckets. I thought Sandalwood was a seat color in 69-70, I didn't think it was for 71-72, but I'm not sure.

Anybody seen fawn anywhere for 67-68 buddy buckets? Can any of you board vendors get a 67-68 bucket seat upholstery kit and CST door panel covers in fawn??

The 67/68 upholstery would be easy for an upholsterer to duplicate if a good match to the vinyl is out there.

Re: Upholstery Kits in Fawn or Sandalwood?

I have never seen reproduction Fawn interior. My Black 68 1 ton has fawn interior, but I was lucky it was in mint condition!! Try SMS Auto Fabric, they made the interior for my 1960 Chevy Wagon, 100% correct factory stock. Let me know if you find anything. Good luck!!

Re: Upholstery Kits in Fawn or Sandalwood?

I have a set of '67 and '68 buddy buckets in SADDLE FAWN (color code 525 according to the Chevrolet color chart...). Brothers Trucks has them, link below, in a color they call "Light Saddle" which, I suspect, might be the same. PICKMUP (Frank) has color swatches of all the available interior materials so I check my old ones against his swatches before ordering and have not been disappointed. He has great prices as well.

My '67 and my old '68 C30...now oldiron's award winning tilt flatbed with SADDLE FAWN interior. I think this is the color you are referring to.

Re: Upholstery Kits in Fawn or Sandalwood?

That color seemed to be the most common interior in 67-8 GM trucks and that is the color that is NOT available.
Here is a new fawn color that is closer that anything before, but still off a little.
I have always found that the visors were a shade off from the door panels/seats. Probably made by a different company.
This is a pair of NOS visors, so no fading, but still probably not exactly the same as the doors & seats. (I called them "pewter", not the GM name for it).
The other colors are: off white, the old fawn, and sandlewood.
I might be able to have the 68 style CST bucket and door panels done in this, but it would be a hassle: no returns, up to 8wks, & extra cost. I wouldn't try it unless it was a complete package: buddie seats, foams, doors, carpet, tank cover, etc. and there would be no returns.

SMS Auto Fabrics in Canby, OR can fix you up with EXACT excellent quality material, even do the covers, door panels and visors for you. They quoted me about $250 for the complete door panels. They do beautiful restoration work or will just supply you the raw material.

Re: Upholstery Kits in Fawn or Sandalwood?

I like the 67s with the inserts in the buckets, but only the 68 is being made with the correct "heat pressed" pattern in the vinyl.
I don't suppose SMS can make the seat & door panel heat pressed line pattern unless they have the special molds made up for them.
It would be nice if one of the companies would get it ALL right...

Re: Upholstery Kits in Fawn or Sandalwood?

Frank, I toured SMS last spring and they have at least two machines that can duplicate the heat pressed stitching...it is AMAZING. They had another machine on order due to a large amount of business. When I say they can do it all...they really can. I saw a set of stock 914 Porsche buckets they had just finished that were black and some un-godly birght green plaid...LOL! If you want the Highlander seats and patterns they have them...their inventory is just unbelievable!

BTW...What year are those red buckets since both my '68 SADDLE FAWN and my '67 SADDLE FAWN had the inserts. See the pic of them above. Now I cannot verify that the '67 had the bucket option on the SPID but the '68 certainly did.

Re: Upholstery Kits in Fawn or Sandalwood?

Under the FAQ section of SMS's website, it says that they only sell yardage, not seat covers. It sounds like you guys have talked to them about complete covers. I'll call them tomorrow to find out.

Frank, thanks for the info. My one ton wasn't a CST originally, but I'm converting it to one. It was a low mileage motor home, however, so, my visors, dash pad, seat belts and carpet are perfect and I have a set of NOS fawn arm rests. So, I really just need the seat covers and the CST door panel covers and my interior would be done.

Re: Upholstery Kits in Fawn or Sandalwood?

Husker, Unless they lost the guys that were doing all of their custom interior work since this last summer they will do the complete package. They will also just provide the material with the stitching molded into it as well. We have board members in Portland that are very close to Canby.

Re: Upholstery Kits in Fawn or Sandalwood?

Just talked to SMS. They have the correct fawn material, with molded seams in it. They will make the door panel covers, but not the seat covers. There isn't really anything to the door panel covers anyway. They are getting me a quote on the material. I have a local upholstery shop who does really good work. If I can get the correct material, that's most of the battle right there. They are sending me samples as well. I'll let you guys know how it turns out and what this ends up costing.

Re: Upholstery Kits in Fawn or Sandalwood?

I will be interested since they quoted me about $275 for two (2) complete door panels. They must have lost their guys to do the complete seat covers since they were doing them. But they might have to have the complete seat to do them and make sure they fit properly. You might ask them what they would charge if you send them the flat patterns for the seat material (your old covers) and they just copy it. This way you could have your local interior guy sew it together and fit it for you. Just a thought! The machines that are used to mold the seams into the material work on flat patterns so as long as they have the flat patterns and know where the seams go, they can mold them. Good luck!

DOH...now I see the difference between the '67 and '68 Chevy but my '68 GMC (BLUE) look just like the '67 Chevy (SADDLE FAWN)!

Re: Upholstery Kits in Fawn or Sandalwood?

So, here's what they quoted me for material. $79 per yard for the correct fawn material with the heat pressed lines in it. $49 per yard for the correct fawn material with no lines, for the sides and back of the seats. They said that I would need about 1 1/2 yards of the heat pressed material and about 2 1/2 yards of the plain material. That's just for the seats, console, etc.

As far as door panels are concerned, they did quote me initially around $300 to build them. I explained that they are really just the base model metal door panels wrapped in the seat fabric. So, I am just going to add some extra heat pressed material to my order and I'm sure my upholstery guy can make them, or I could probably just do it myself. I'm probably going to order some extra material to do a headliner as well. I know they weren't available in '68, but I have some new headliner trim and I would kind of like one in this truck.

She pulled an original brochure for the 68 Chevy trucks, which shows seats with the inserts like Old Iron has in his one ton. I always thought that seats with the insert like Old Iron has in his truck were correct for '67 and the pattern like stllookn has on his pair of seats were correct for '68. But, I've seen several '68's with seat inserts like Old Iron's. I believe Joe's Junk's black '68 has those inserts too.

It costs the same to have the heat pressed material made in either style. So, I'm debating which style I want to go with. I think I like the narrower pattern better, but the other pattern matches the door panels better. Especially if I put a headliner in this truck, it would be nice to have the seats, door panels and headliner all the same.

Anybody have any opinions?

Re: Upholstery Kits in Fawn or Sandalwood?

So, I guess in '67 the factory built seats with inserts that didn't match door panels. Then, in '68, they changed the seat upholstery to match the door panels??

But, we have several examples of '68 trucks with '67 type upholstery in them. Does that mean they are early '68's, maybe before they switched?

Re: Upholstery Kits in Fawn or Sandalwood?

Here is my 68 Interior. From what I know the two tone is correct for 68, the other style is correct for 67. Note my center console is not correct, it has 67 material in it. There was no center console when I got this truck. It was all i could find at the time. I really like this color. I got lucky, this interior is original!!!

I love that pic Joe. Beautiful. So, that insert is a little different color? A shade darker, I guess?
