Well boys and girls, the verdict is in - fried compressor and fried alternator. Still don't know how it happened. The best I can figure is that the AC might have been on while I was aiming the headlights with the truck idling (so as not to run down the battery), causing the compressor to overheat (I don't have electric fans). Either this also ruined the alternator or it just went on its own. The disconnected cable was a red herring... Anyway, the most helpful answers came from WorkinLonghorn and arkRacing. Since WorkinLonghorn was first, he gets the $10. However, arkRacing included some helpful Old Air info so he gets $5. So as soon as I can figure out how to do it, I'll donate said amounts towards board membership
