76 short box worth asking price???

hi.Im looking at a 76 chevy shortbox fleetside 2wd.has v8,auto.good interier, frame looks good, not rusty at all,but it needs ALL new sheetmetal.how the sheetmetal could rust out but the frame look so good is odd to me.said it was stored for a few years.anyway,he wants $750 for it.worth that much?this would be the first chevy I had with this body style so Im not too familiar with a build on this type.
If I do get it I have plans to put a 90 blazer/burb front clip on it.always liked that look.thanks.

Re: 76 short box worth asking price???

alot of that would depend on what panels need to be replaced..

$750 sounds like a steal to me at least.. depending on what panels need to be replaced.. any rocker or cab rust, id offer him 400-500..those are pretty major panels, to be replacing... if the rust is just on the fenders and bed...id just give the dude the money and get to restoring it ...

Re: 76 short box worth asking price???

yes.sorry to not mention that.rockers and cab corners need replaced.it was all locked up and couldent open up to look under carpet, but from underneath the floor looked good.ALL sheetmetal needs replaced, doors hood, fenders, box, ect.
I know places like LMC and such carry everything, but didnt know if it it was even worth getting.like I said, the frame really surprised me.real clean, along with therest of the chasis.my 1990 silverado was way worse.

id keep looking...unless he wants to sell it for 200, ... if the frame and drive train is good, you can remove the body, and find a nice long/shortbed truck with a bad frame...pick that up for a couple hundred and make a hybrid...

you can build it the way you want off the shortbed frame....specially with winter coming up.. good to have a project, and stay off the roads.. (lived in massachusttes for a year)....lol

Re: 76 short box worth asking price???

I wouldn't even buy it...plowing is hard on trucks...and their frames. I would keep looking for a cleaner truck. Once you start replacing metal, things get expensive...then you have to paint all of it! I would look for a clean truck in the $1500-2000 range...you'll be ahead financially and time wise by the time it is all said and done.

Re: 76 short box worth asking price???

you live in the northeast where i live i buy trucks like that all day long for $300 and less. if you look for my thread on the 82 youll see my $300 truck and the only reason i paid that was for the carb and manifold ( edelbrock)
alot depends on whats in the truck and its other conditions ie motor and trans and interior. these trucks are notorious for rot in the rockers and cab corners. Pics would help alot here tho
If youre really stuck on the truck id say offer no more than four and work up to five but i think youre way overpaying unless the truck was last owned by elvis or was autographed by the pope or something
PS we have a vendor or two one here and one in particular ive dealt with who has excellent replacement parts at a very fair price and if your order is big enough it may pay to drive into NJ and pick it all up
on eidt if you put a later model front clip on it you need to change the cowl and the wiper arm assembly so it all fits

Re: 76 short box worth asking price???

i dont know if its a feasible alternative or not, but in general, if you have access to a trailer and tow vehicle and have the time ---- head southwest---

i have looked at plenty of pieces of crap while looking for parts vehicles and things, but i rarely see the type of rust on the cabs and cab supports, etc. you guys see up north.

still see rusted out fender lips because those things hold mud like crazy --- but thats easy compared to some of the stuff up north

Starting out a little closer to rust free may pay big dividends when you are adding up the receipts when its done --- even if its a 1000 mile drive or more

The bodies didn`t hold up on 73-77s at all in the rust belt. They had serious rust issues before they got old.
