Wouldn't it be cool to raise the hood and find a dual quad 409 sitting there? Chromed out with a 4 speed and 4:10 rear. Oh man, the sixtys again!

Re: Old 348 in a '69 C/10 - COOL!!

Seems like we called the 348 a truck motor from the git-go, but boat anchor was commonplace, too.

Still, it's a cool engine and didn't it get all the way to 427CID at one point in it's history? As a 409 it is legendary. It's still cool to raise the hood on a '58 and see one there.

427 W? More back ground on that one, please. I only ever knew of the 348, and 409. I always wanted a 409, but if they made a 427, hubba hubba!

There were only 57 made, and only 7 are known to exist.

Quote:
The saga starts in late 1962, when Chevy NASCAR and NHRA engineers came up with the 427-inch designs. Chevy's 427 drag engine was dubbed Z-11, and was a stroked version of the 409 with special two-piece aluminum intake, similar-style "W" heads with bigger valves, stronger crank and a longer rod to arrive at its 427 size and conservative 430-horsepower rating (it produced closer to 475). Drag stars Hayden Profitt, Butch Leal, Ronnie Sox, Malcolm Durham and Dave Strickler all competed on the nation's drag strips with Z-11 427s, which could be ordered from a Chevy dealer by anyone with the RPO Z11 option code for $1,240 more (big money those days). The Z-11s came with aluminum front ends, no heater and a radio delete. Of note is the fact that the 348-409 and Z-11 427 didn't really utilize a combustion chamber in the cylinder head. A total of 57 Z-11s were ordered, although only seven remain today. The oval racing Mystery 427 Motor, however, could not be purchased at the dealer. Chevy actually "introduced" to select NASCAR teams a canted valve cylinder head 427 engine back in late 1962 under huge secrecy. These engines were completely different from the 409 and Z-11 designs. They had beefier bottom ends, stronger forged steel crankshafts and better connecting rods. However, the real secret of the Mystery bigblock V-8's 500-plus horsepower was the all-new cylinder head design, which included a combustion chamber. The two plane valve angles, also known as "canted" or "porcupine" designs, opened a path to improved performance.

The 409 was called the garbage truck motor. I drove a 64 Impala SS that had a dual quad 409 with a 4 speed once. It was kick ass. I tried buying that car for years.

Re: Old 348 in a '69 C/10 - COOL!!

"She's Real Fine, My 409".....makes a good ring tone, too. A buddy has it on his phone.

As to the "boat anchor" designation....you kinda sorta had to have lived the times to understand. In conjunction with the 348's, Chevrolet also had the Turboglide transmission. It was a kinda Dynaflow sort of tranmission. It had a GR position on the selector that actually stood for Grade Retard, but we just called it "Grunt". They usually just got replaced with a Powerglide, and we were all happy when it happened. A buddy had a '60 Impala 4-dr HT that had a 283 with a TG. He actually sold his '57 Bel Aire Convertible to buy it. The '57 had it all but the top was leaky and it had a continental kit. The '60 didn't leak and it didn't have the extra stuff on its' hiney. Yeah, we know....hindsight is always 20-20.

Saw a one-owner '58 Impala that had tons of factory add-ons, like A/C, P/S, P/B, 348 Tri-Power, Powerglide, etc. Her son drove it to a convertible car show we were holding back in '81. It was a barn find of a car, but it wasn't for sale. We all were holding back tears. She shoulda been ashamed, huh?

But the 409 was eclipsed by the 396 in mid-year '65. Try finding a '65 Impala SS with a 409, as originally equipped.

As for the 427 W-motor, and the Porcupine-headed mystery motor.....Smokey Yunick is a good resource for info.
