Would this engine be worth my time?
I just found out where there is an old Oldsmobile car sitting by a shed. The car itself is shot. More of the body is rusted away than is still in tact. I've been told that it is a 1965 Oldsmobile Eighty-eight or Nintey-eight. I've also been told that it has a big block 425. I'm hoping to talk to the guy that owns it and at least scavange the motor if it's worth anything.
If I can get it, would it be worth it? That would change my plans for my truck but if I can get a big block for the right price.....

Re: Would this engine be worth my time?
I sold a rebuildable (not running) 425 out a '67 Olds Toronado on Ebay about a year and a half ago for $800. They are fairly popular among Olds purists for mid 60's 4-4-2's and Toros.

Re: Would this engine be worth my time?
I don't want to sell it if i get it. I'd want it in my c-10. I've always wanted a big block powered vehicle but I didn't want to spend the $$$ buying one right now. However, I'm gonna try to get the car for scrap price or less. The guy that has it is not a car guy at all. He just drove it for a while till it broke down (I don't know what broke) and just left it sitting where it is today.

Re: Would this engine be worth my time?
BTW, the 4 barrel 425's were rated at 385 HP and 475 ft·lb TQ and they are very strong.

Might be an interesting project. I always loved that dual snorkel air cleaner.

Re: Would this engine be worth my time?
Me too. I started to keep it, but was offered 3 bills by someone on Ebay that saw it in a pic when I was listing other stuff off the car, so it had to go!

Re: Would this engine be worth my time?
Well crap. So much for my plans of a nice driver with a 6 cyl and a 5 speed that'll get 20+ mpg. If I decide to put a BB in it, it'll probably suck gas.

Re: Would this engine be worth my time?
they were awsom engines but require a little love to perform on todays low octain lead free fuels. they were high compression engines and tend to self distruct if left to predetinate

Re: Would this engine be worth my time?
425,S HAD STEEL CRANKS AND HI-COMPRESSION PISTONS. almost 500 lbs of torque and 385 hp. if you decide to run it you,ll have to get hardened valve seats installed in the exhaust valve areas of the heads. there not set up for unleaded gas. also its a 93 octane gas engine for sure. it will bolt right in a 67-72 chevy truck. you,ll need a bop manuel trans bellhousing-clutch setup to do it. i have it all on the shelf if you have trouble finding it. you might also have to drill the back of the crank for a pilot bushing if going manuel trans.

Re: Would this engine be worth my time?
Sounds like it might be some work but it could be fun.
![]() What do you mean by the "bop" bell housing?

Re: Would this engine be worth my time?
Buick Pontiac Olds bolt pattern. Different than a Chevy.

Re: Would this engine be worth my time?
Not to mention olds motors cost almost double to build vs a BBC. Not that I don't like olds motors, just seems to be a waste of time and money to be different.
