Thanks in advance,

Rob

Re: Help with SBC Engine ID

thanks for the quick response. The link is very informative(is now a saved favorite site) but it only has casting information that I saw. I have the generic 3970010 code. I need help explaining what the ID code is about, but this could just be over my head and I missed the information you were trying to send me to.

Did I miss it?

Thanks again,

Rob

Re: Help with SBC Engine ID

There is a code casted into the block, usually in the rear, that will be a letter, space, 2 digit number, space, 1 digit number. For example, G 24 5. The letter represents the month, the second series of numbers represents the day, and last reresents the last digit of the year. With that being said, if this was the casting date on your 3970010 block, it would mean July 24, 1975. That will help you break down which CTU code it is. Sure would be nice if it were the '70 LT1 since your engine is a 350. The date code would confirm that.

Re: Help with SBC Engine ID

I climbed in the engine bay myself and checked out the casting number it is NOT 3970010, like the PO said , but actually 3951509. Which if I read the mortec site right is a SBC 400. Oh well I would have liked the LT-1.

Also the CTU number is actually ----15J110289 F 082bCTU-----

I am not sure if that changes anything.

I just got the truck about a month ago and have just now started seeing what I am starting with.

Guess I am setup like this- 400 SBC, TH400(this I do know for sure by the pan), 12 bolt rear. I am not sure that the gearing is yet but it is REALLY short. About 50 mph = 3000 rpm in top gear with 295/50R15's on the rear. The rearend also has a detroit locker "no-spin" posi. The PO also had a NOS nitrous system installed, I already took that out.

Now I need to figure out the steps of turning a strip truck into a highway friendly cruising beast. Open to all suggestions.

Thanks all for the help,

Rob
