Welder?
What kind and size welder does everyone have in their shop. I'm needing a welder to weld rockers, drip rail, mirror holes, stake holes. Plus I don't know how to weld, I was wondering if it was cheaper to buy a welder instead of hiring it done?

A firepower fp120 goes for about $400 from thetoolwarehouse.net. It's a great gas/gassless mig welder for lighter duty work.
You'll still need a gas tank, helmet and gloves to get started, but for under $500, you should be well on your way. |

IMO, to get started in welding, for body work, and light stuff indoors, go with a MIG set up with gas. Meaning not intershield, or fluxcore. Also I would stay with the big three, Lincoln, Miller, and Hobart for brand. Many other makers out there, but for a first timer dont take the chance on ruining yourself on a cheap machine. I would also, in your case, look into the 110v wire feed instead of the 220v wire feed. Ask more questions and get more answers. I have a Lincoln HD 3200, set up with gas. It comes with everything you need but the gas bottle. $460.00 at Home depot.

invest a little bit of coin in a few welding books and try to take a beginner course at a local community or vocational school if you can --
a lot of them are at night because they are geared around adults----- this will ensure that you don't do more harm than good to your cab with your new welder |
