Re: Ramjet 454 EFI swap…linky
So would that work on a 396 too?
Something worth thinking about when/If I go big block. Thanks for the link, nice project. |

Re: Ramjet 454 EFI swap…linky
Yes, it would work on any short deck big block providing the head ports are the same design (oval vs. square). The main difference would be the calibration programmed into the MEFI engine controller, which can be custom calibrated by Arizona Speed and Marine to any specs, cam profile, etc.
I thought about putting it on the 396 in my GMC 2wd but the K10 is my favorite toy. I will be very to glad to get rid of the carburetor for high altitude 4 wheeling. Carburetors suck at altitude. You could create this same concoction by using an intake off of a 96-00 L29 454 from a C/K truck since these marine L29 intakes are not that easy to come by.

Fixed it for you. Your carb does suck at altitude. My q-jet does just fine, difference is the poor 350 is tired. I'm all for the injection project through. Can't wait to see this frankenstien run with a mechanical fuel pump...ITS ALIVE!!!! VT, I'd say your best bet to put this setup on a 396 would be to get the complete top end off of a L29. Heads and intake. Much like the Vortec heads on the 350's, L29 heads are a newer design and do flow pretty well compared to older castings. They just haven't caught on like the 350's have.

Given our local and playground….we both need EFI badly. I see a Vortec 6.0L in store for you in the near future. Not the carbureted intake and MSD dealeo you have been talking about either. I won’t let you do that to a Gen III. If you get a 6.0L you are going to do it right and go all the way with the latest goodies.

Re: Ramjet 454 EFI swap…linky
I knew I'd provoke that response from you. Yes it was puking, but compairing the power from a 5000 mile 454 to a 100000 mile wheezer 350 is like comparing a bb gun to a bazooka. Sure they both shoot projectiles, but one does it with a little more ease than the other.
Not to mention the fact that you are running a more appropriate gear ratio for the tire size than I am. I remember the days that your truck had a hard time pulling the pass to westcliffe with the 454 and 3.73 gears. Point being it's not all engine, all carb or gearing but the carefull combination of all. Had I 4.56's too, I'm sure I wouldn't have had to whip that poor 350 like a red headed stepchild. Yes, a gen III sure looks like the plan, but we got to find one first! If the darn carb intake wasn't as much as the FI stuff I would have a carb on it first, then injection. I've been surfing craigslist for vortec 350's and gen III's. I'll find one sooner or later.

Re: Ramjet 454 EFI swap…linky
It's ON now! No turning back now! Got the plumbing on order yet? I hear the snow calling in the hills for a shakedown run.

Re: Ramjet 454 EFI swap…linky
Got all the AN fittings and whatnot last week….Crimany, talk about expensive stuff!
I just need the rear main seal and oil pan gasket. GMSPO has had that stuff on back order now forever due to the strike a while back but Napa has stock so I guess I am using aftermarket stuff instead. I decided not to send the controller to AZ speed and marine just yet. Figure we’ll just light it up on the RamJet 502 programmed controller just to see how it runs that way if it needs reprogramming I will be able to notice a before and after difference.

Re: Ramjet 454 EFI swap…linky
Sweet. What's left besides the plumbing and the pan/rear main seals? Just the wiring or am I missing anything else?

Re: Ramjet 454 EFI swap…linky
Still want to convert the clutch over to hydraulic while it is apart. Other than that....just drop it in and hope it runs.
