m49 trans option

I have searched the site, and everyone agrees that if you had the smallblock you had the 350 trans. Also I found a post about the asterisk by that option code causing a guy to wonder if that meant that even if you had a 350 motor the truck would have been equipped with the 400 trans. My cheyenne super has that asterisk by the m49 code, but the original engine and trans have been removed.

One thing I do know is that if you had the 400 trans you would have an electronic kickdown on that trans. Where on these trucks was that switch for the kickdown. On my 73 it has a switch on the accelerator for the trans. That should be a guarantee, if you find the switch you had the 400.

I would appreciate one of you guys with an original 400 trans truck letting us know where that switch was placed.

Re: m49 trans option

in 71 and 72, the kick down is on the throttle pedal.
I've only seen speculation that the astric means anything at all.
Many small block trucks came with the TH400. In 69 and later, the TH350 was the more common tranny of the 2 when a small block was opted, but still, there were 400's bolted to small blocks too.

Re: m49 trans option

I've seen 5 or 6 trucks that had original TH400 and the m49 option on the label with the Asterisk, but like Andy said it's only speculation on what it means. I doubt we will ever know what it really means for sure but since the 350 and 400 used the same code (m49) it is quite possible the asterisk was used to distinguish between the two.

Re: m49 trans option

Tim, you are right, I didn't mention that since he is messin with a 71/72 truck.
The 70 and older trucks did in fact have the kick down switch on the carb.

Re: m49 trans option

Thanks for all of the information. You are all right. I looked at a 70 c30 in the junkyard today, it has the kickdown switch on the carb.

Re: m49 trans option

I just looked at pics of the label on the 69, it has the M49 with no asterisk but it is a 400 trans behind a 350, switch is on the carb.

DOH! I misread that... he said on the carb... I thought he said on the cab.
My fault.
