Ok guys have you noticed on the 48-53 model trucks the rear wheel isnt centered in the fender its needs to be pushed back about 2 inches to center the wheel in the fender. Just was wondering if people had noticed this before welding in their rearend I am centering my rearend in the fender housing. Have seen it and it does look better than the location of the factory being located 2 inches forward. Has anyone centered their wheels to the fenders?

yup.. it can be an illusion. look the rivit holes look like center but the tire is actually center... this is 2" back roughly

from the picture u sent it seems to me it is 2 inches forward and needs to come back in the fender abit

I just took a ruler to the picture u sent and measure on screen i got from 41/4 inches fro side to side of the picture from the bottom the front of the fender at the body crease line and put a straight edge 2 1/8 inches and it lined up with the second rivet hole whatca think? if you measure fender width and center it will be about 2 inches back center lined up with the second rivet hole.

The early years were made this way. it may be two but I think its closer to 1.1/2" too far forward. We move them back 1.1/2' by welding on new perches with the hole more forward. Later on i guess GM figured it out

Thats what it looks like anyway wont be putting on new perches for shackles going with 4-link and will rework it then mark center line on frame from stock setup center line. Have a friend just move his back 2 inches and it does make a difference in the look of the rear wheel center compaired to be forward and leaving space behind rear wheel that looks not centered.

ok it's time for a little science... think of the fender opening as a circle the circle has a center based upon the center of the top of the circle. so if you were to measure the highest point of the opening you would have the center... now the problem here is the opening is'nt a circle it's a funny arch. so do you devide the opening based on an arch or a circle???

by the picture i would go with the arch instead of the circle theory because you trying to wrap the fender into a circle instead of taking overall length of the opening at the bottom of the fender and find the center it does look better pushed back look at the gap u have behind the rear tire and look at it pushed back to the second rivet hole with the tire centered inside the fender and egual gaps front and back.

whats intresting the gap between the bottom of the fender to the outside of the tire says it's centered but the top od the theoritical circle says its too far back....

That may be, but from a visual aspect because of the opening at the bottom, it creates the optical illusion that it's centered. At least I like it so to each their own.

maybe split the difference. the first looks to far forward, the second looks a touch too far back

I like the placement of your rear axle, would you take a measurment from the rear of the chassis to the center line of the axle for me so I can check the placement of my perches, and also give me a total wheel base length of your truck. I am guessing 120.5" !!
