Welded on Rear Bumper
Any tips advice on takng off a welded on rear bumper. I went to bolt on a gently used chrome rear bumper and to my dismay I say the old rusty bumer had been welded on. Any advice would be apreciated,

I had to remove my old bumper with the hot wrench. Other than saw it off I dont see any other options for you. I guess you could grind it off but that doesnt sound like any fun.

Yep, the rear bumper on my truck was welded on as well. Had a friend, who owns a metal fabrication shop, cut the welds as clean as he could. I then used my trusty Makita 4 1/2" angle grinder to finish cleaning the frame.

Mine was welded on but was also bolted. I decided to test the quality of the welds (based on some of the other foo that was on this truck when I got it, I had a hunch...) so I took out all bolts except 1 on each side. Then I jumped up and down on the bumper like a banshee... and I actually twisted the welds in two. I managed to bust my shin when the bumper swiveled down and threw me off. But it was well worth the pain to see that nasty bumper off.

The old nasty step bumper was welded and bolted to the GMC too. I took a grinder(your right...that was NOT fun) and I was unable to get to the very top of the weld, so i hooked up a strap around a pole and let her rip.
Bout gave me whiplash. |
