how much does my 79 swb 2wd scottsdale weigh? right now it has the 4.1 250ci inline 6. but i would like to know how much it weighs so i could figure out how many horses i need when i get a new engine. would like at least 300 horses but i wonder if i need more?

Most long beds weigh around 4,000
Best bet, weigh it at a cement plant, or lumber yard.

My truck's weight, with several gallons of gas in tank and a spare wheel in bed, and no driver:

FL:1161 --- FR:1165 --- RL:0724 --- RR:0752 --- LLVW:3802

Truck is a plain-Jane '79 woody stepper with a 350 engine and 350 tranny and 33s and no A/C or emissions whatsoever.

Yer truck being a fleetside with aluminum wheels and passenger car tires I'd expect something in the 36-3700lb range lightly loaded.

keep in mind when shopping for a new engine, most of the crate motors are sold with flywheel hp measurements still ---- the oh so popular 290hp GM crate motor i've been told is more like 220 at the rear wheels.

But before anyone says anything bad about a 200 -225 horse engine, i would encourage them to take a drive in a vehicle with that power level that is running well.

My tbi powered 350 blazer was rated at 190hp, and runs much better than those numbers would suggest (not a dragster, but still pretty snappy)

300 hp at the rear wheels would be pretty fast -- and would likely require 350-375 flywheel hp, but would work without any chassis modifications and would still probably be usable as a truck

I would say you would not go wrong with a motor rated (at the flywheel)between 275 and 375, which would give 2 -300 true rear wheel horses

my 2000 4x4 was rated 285 horsepower and that seems to be sufficient but i wonder what the weight difference is in it and my 79? my 2000 is ext cab and 4x4 so do you think it would be heavier than my 79 swb 2wd?

your 2000 model 4x weighs at least 5000 lbs. the 285 hp its rated at is net horsepower , so to equal its performance with your older truck-- an engine rated at 325 - 350hp would probably be in order.

But its a funny thing -- my new F150 has 305 rated hp, plus about 25 in add-ons (exhaust, chip and intake),
but the blazer i mentioned before was rated at 190 and runs as fast as the new effie -- gearing and weight play a big factor in it too i guess - but i would estimate a 4x blazer to weigh as much as a 2wd late model, but i dont know

The GM 290hp crate motor with a set of Fast burn heads -(another 6 or 700 bucks) and some other doo-dads is good for close to 400 according to a recent build-up in Chevy High Performance magazine.

I imagine that would haul the mail in an early truck
