1-ton axle seal replacement

I was hoping to get around to this a few weeks ago, but a few unaccepted priorities popped up. Seems like I should be able to get to it this week and I wanted to know a few thing before I started to tear into it.

Truck was an old 1-ton work truck for my previous employed and the seals were replaced around two years ago and the truck probabally hasn't even rack up 100miles since then. When I did the wheel cylinder on one side I skipped the seals since they're so new, but after a drive on the interstate (probabally the first time that truck has been over 50mph in atleast a decade) the axle started to leak on the other side. At first I thought the other wheel cylinder went out, but this is definetley axle fluid.

Do I need to remove the drum to get to this seal, or can I swap it for a new one by just removing the axle shaft?? Are they're multiple seals for the full-floating axle or just one?? Trying to get some info before I tear into it, thanks!!

Re: 1-ton axle seal replacement

I'm assuming you are talking about the copper/aluminum gasket goes under the 8 bolt axle flange. You will normally see gear oil leak out on the outside rim. If so, you just have to pull the axle out and replace it. If its coming of the backside of the drum, you will have to pull the drum off.

Re: 1-ton axle seal replacement

It's coming from the backside of the drum, so I will need to pull the drum off then. Alright, thank you.
