I just cant get a break.....

So I got the 70 running, and Im on my way to work this morning and Im watching the tach because its acting weird and jumping around. While watcing the tach and I notice not only am I almost full throttle, but Im slowing down and my trucks only getting louder. I let off the gas, give it a few quick blips, nothing. So I floor it, to my surprise nothing happens still. So I throw it in neutral and coast about half a mile to a dirt road, I shut her down and through the headlight beams all I can see is smoke. I open the door step in a puddle of tranny fluid. Something tells me that isnt normal so I useing my cell as a flashlight since its 4am I try to crawl my fat ass under my truck. Well, Im fat and my truck sits so low I cant go over speed bumps, and I didnt want to get dirty so I gave up on the idea. Luckily its been leaking since I bought it four years ago and I always carry a few quarts of tranny juice just incase. Pour them in and the puddle only got bigger. So I called into work and told them I was gonna be late because Im a ****ty wrench. And walked home about two miles. And left my truck abandoned out on some dirt road.

First the motor
Then the rust
Then another motor
Body damage from idiots who come home drunk
And yet, another motor
Now the tranny.

All in one year...

Sorry about your luck. If it weren't for bad luck, most of us wouldn't have any at all.

Re: I just cant get a break.....

Really sorry to hear that your tranny let go and left you stranded. At least you were not farther from home, but 2 miles would be quite a hike for me that early in the morning.

We could start a very long thread on the bad luck we all havie, I bet.

Re: I just cant get a break.....

couple years ago I blew my first V-8 in the 67. My dad and I spent a week converting everything from an i-6 and 3 speed to a V-8 and 700R4. Drove the truck for 3 miles and my supposedly "rebuilt" motor blew (it was in an 83 firebird my dad bought, but he wanted to stuff a pontiac 400/th400 in it, so I got the "rebuilt" Chevy 350/700R4 that was in it). Bought a rebuilt motor. 6 months later tranny blew.

I've also blown 3 motors in Toyota trucks (all 22R's).

You're not the only one

My tranny let go twice in my project truck before I took it off the road for the frame off build. Sorry for your luck, I'm sure it can only get better now.

Sorry to hear about your luck this year. Sometimes we are tested, but eventually we can pull through anything.

Good luck on the rebuild.

Re: I just cant get a break.....

This doesn't mean the tranny blew, but sounds more like a leak (ie the puddle). Fix the leak and fill it up and get on your way. FYI we bring on a lot of our own luck when it comes to mechanical stuff, like service, care and upkeep. I had one trans let go on me ans it was a 4l60e out of a cop car. I drove it home 100 miles (I destoyed it, but I didn't walk home).

Re: I just cant get a break.....

Not as bad as my tranny problem a few years ago. I was with a few friends up in the woods about 25 miles from town. Started up a hill and the engine started racing and I wasn't going anywhere, then the smoke cloud came, then I stepped out and noticed the flames. What made it even scarier is that it was fire season. The tranny fluid had boiled up out of the dipstick tube onto the headers and caught fire. Luckily we had enough beer to put the fire out, it ended up being a 26 beer fire. I was able to drive it back to town but the tranny was shot. When I took it in to be rebuilt the tranny guy said he had never seen anything so bad, there were parts melted inside and the core couldn't even be used.

I had a turbo 350 grenade too. Said the case was too bad to be used as a core. All I did was leave the stoplight and it never left 1st gear, then changed out a junkyard one in the apt parking lot, they were not happy, it was junk too, so I hauled it back home 250 miles,

Re: I just cant get a break.....

I dont know whats wrong with it, filled it up...didnt leak. Drove back home the few miles and after about a mile and it warmed up it started slipping then nothing. But no leak, so we shut her off and called my buddy for a tow. He gets there, and I dont want to be towed with out powersteering or powerbreaks, so I start her up and on my way to neutral I pass reverse and it grabs and gets into gear, not only that but I had forward gears too. We managed to get it to his house. But not before having it slip/give out about 30 times the whole way.

If I shut it off and give it time to cool down it would make it about 2 blocks before acting up again.

I dont know whats wrong with it. All I know is the motor has to stop running and the tranny will be fine for a while.

Any ideas?

A dude my buddy knows has a complety stock TH350 with about 120K on it, asking $50 for it. So Im gonna jump all over that and swap that ***** out.

Oh, and does anyone have a pic of their undercariage. I never notciced before but theres a crossmember that the pan damn near sits on. Anyone else have that?

Re: I just cant get a break.....

When i put the first caddy motor in the longhorn, I had taken it out on a few test drives around the shop, and went and got tags for it.
Went to work saturday, clocked out early, dragged it in to do some minor tweaking and slapped the plates on ther, called Geico, and i was on the road. Drove it home for the first time.
Got up Sunday, drove it around town all day... about 150 miles all in all. Grinning the whole time. Seemed to be a little lean, but nothing to get worried about.
Nice strong motor, pushed me into the seats, made me giggle.
Monday, takin my baby sister to work, running late. Pulling a small hill, passing someone, heard a muffled pop.
Probably nothing.
Floor it.... I think I can get her there on time...
Not speeding up.
Smell smoke.
Starting to sound like a 6.5 diesel.
Look at the guages... oil pressure is pegged. TO THE LEFT.
Blew it.

Found out a long time later, one of the diaphrams in the brake booster popped, causing an instant mega-lean condition in a single cylinder (had the hose plugged into a single runner on the intake) pulling a hill at about 4000 RPM... shattered the piston.

Re: I just cant get a break.....

lol! good point. Just mentioning it with some of the others with there bad luck stories.
Take a good look at your tranny, and the one being offered. Odds are, the one he has is a long tail, and if yours is original, it'll be a short tail tranny. You'll need your driveshaft chopped.

Re: I just cant get a break.....

Sounds like the clutch basket needs rebuilt. Mine did the same. I would put it in reverse after I first started it and then it would warm up and nothin but slipping. Cost me $600 to get the tranny rebuilt. Hopefully that helps. Sorry if that isn't what you wanted to hear.

Re: I just cant get a break.....

I'd drop the pan and change out the filter and change the oil first. Dirty oil might cause the problem. Also check for metal residue in the bottom of the pan thats usually a saw sign that the clutches are gone if theres alot in there. Also have the stall convertor checked out. Overfilling the box also causes aeration of the fluid and slipping. Also with the pan off check the length of the dipstick, its not as stupid as it sounds, the aftermarket dipstick I got with my T400 was just a little longer than it should have been causing me to overfill the tranny enough to cause slip

It changes its self about every 3-4 days due to the leaks
