Late model brake booster and master cylinder?
Alright, you guys out there who have done the late model brake booster and master cylinder, what did it take to swap it in place of the stock parts?
Is it bolt in? Does it mount to the stock studs? What about the shaft that runs through the firewall? And can you bend the stock lines enough to get them to meet up with the new MC? I've been looking at that nasty jumbo sized booster in my truck today and I think it needs to go. I'm going to all this trouble to smooth the firewall only to hang that giant thing on there. Anybody who's done this swap, I'd sure appreciate any pointers. And, I'm pushing my luck here, but if you've got part numbers or donor vehicle info, that would be great! Thanks, Kenneth

Just dump the booster all together. Then you can run the biggest cam you can get your hands on!

XXL: I've got a '85 chevy 1/2 ton master cylinder and no booster on my truck and it stops better than I had imagined. I've got the stick front disks/rear drums. If you don't mind a little extra pedal effort, that's the way to go in my opinion. I used to have the stock booster and it was nice, but this setup looks much cleaner, especailly with the smooth firewall. The master cylinder is made of aluminum and the reservoir is plastic........ no more rust!
As for modifications, I had to of course get a manual brake push rod and slightly enlarge the hole in the firewall where the MC pokes through. I originally was going to use the same year S-10 MC, and it fit the original hole, but figured I better go with the 1/2 ton MC since it has a larger bore.

Thanks for the photo!
So does this just bolt right up? What about the shaft? Is it from the '67 or the 85' or are they the same? And if I decide I don't want to give up power, does the booster from the '85 just sit in between the two and bolt right up? Thanks again, Kenneth

The only real modification I had to make was slightly enlarging the hole where the MC goes through the firewall. The bolt holes line right up. I left the two upper holes in my firewall in case I wanted to go back to a booster. I just filled the holes with some nice shiny stainless pan-head bolts. As for the shaft, or pushrod, I pulled one out of a '67 Impala I found at the junkyard thinking it might work. Well, it was too short so I welded some extensions to the "clevis" part, where it hooks to the pedal. I would think a stock manual shaft would work, but I just didn't have one (and I never pass up the chance to get out the grinder and welder)
Now that it is installed, I think I could shorten the shaft and bring the pedal closer to the floor. I've got plenty of room between the floor and the pedal when the brakes are locked up. That way, I wouldn't have to lift my leg up so much to hit the brakes (I've got long legs). The only thing that hold the shaft to the MC is the force of the return spring and whatever stops it as it is release. Therefore, the "stop" would have to be moved forward and then the shaft adjusted accordingly. Make sense?

Hey Kenneth,
I found a shop in the new street trucks mag with the yellow caddy conversion high rise truck on the front. It has a company that makes a power booster to locate under the floor boards like the old 53 trucks. I forgot the company but will look it up. I'm thinking of doing that. It cost ~$450. jay

I think that kit is for 48-59 trucks. If it is you need donor brake pedal arm and arm that connects to the booster along with the frame bracket and tubular trans crossmember to clear the booster master cylinder setup. BEEN THERE,DONE THAT, STILL WAITING ON THE T-SHIRT.

I found the ad again. It is from Turner Enterprises. It says they cater to 60-72 chevy trucks. They've got everything from dropped front crossmembers to a 4" IFS system. I'll call tomorrow to see if they have a catalog.

sup kenneth,
I called them yesterday and the number in the mag is wrong. Guy said he got two other calls that day so it wasn't just me. I'll be sending a letter for a catalog and also let them know about this site. (Hopefully we can get some deals!!!) I guess we'll have to wait. jay

67Shortie: The proportioning valve is off an '85 S-10. I used it because I originally planned on using the S-10 master cylinder, so I already had it. I would assume that it is the same as the 1/2 ton valve. It works just fine.

Has anybody mated a late modle booster and mastercylinder to the original brackets? I was wanting to do something simular to that. I always thought that corvette style boosters looked cool, but I don't they would cross over very well, I kind of hate to start fabbing brake components up. Good way to create a death trap.
