Unhappy Drive in Theaters

Anyone else miss them?
There are a couple around here that are still in operation...but I guess I need to get the cab out of the back of my truck before going huh?

I found this one close to my first apartment. (here in columbus) I had forgotten that it even exsisted untill I was in the old neighborhood and feeling nostalgic.
Sad huh? I wonder why ppl stopped going. I feel WAY more comefortable makin out in my truck than in a crowded theater.

I think there is still one by my mom's place in PA...but I don't think they do movies anymore just flea markets. The one I learned many things at is now a mini strip mall and condo complex.

Many good times at those in my youth :p

Theres one about 5 miles down the road. Its one reason why I went ahead and puit the radio in my truck. Back up, drop the tailgate, pop a cold one and open up the lawnchairs.

Used to be several in central CT years ago, been to most of them back when, there is still one in operation in Southington CT, been there with my 42' Olds 25+ years ago, still have the car, should do it again now that you mention it. Did anyone drive off forgetting to replace the speaker? Did that once with a 58 Ford Fairlane, kept the speaker and mounted it behind the back seat on the deck, thought that was cool with volume control, still sounded like sh!t.

I was on a Jaguar message board a while back and there was a gentleman that had part of his website devoted to Drive-in Theaters mostly in the Tucson AZ area:

Here is a link to that part of his website:

Enjoy

We went to one last year in my 69, I took the rear view mirror off to get a better view and we had to bring a portable FM radio along to here it. It was a double feature. I fell asleep half way through the 1st movie. :p

Didnt make it out to one this year though.

Wow.
I never got a good picture of the one we had in Killeen Tx. Wife took a shot of me in it with my old Longhorn. It had been shut down for years, but the huge screen was still in real good shape. Some b@stards stole all the speakers, I guess that is a big swap meet score.
Someone set fire to it in the fall of '97. I had been in Cali wandering around the Mojave desert for a month doing desert manuvers and came back to see nothing but charred poles.
I woulda loved to get my hands on the low life punks...

Only 2-3 in Oregon I think. Used to be one on 104th and Powell in Portland, but was torn down years ago and now has storage facility on it. Sign is still there though. One is in Dallas, 6 miles from me. Call me crazy, but I've never been to one. Sounds like fun.

There's a few left around here, one about 3 miles away and is busy. Tues is $6 a carload. The lady that runs it also owns a small theater and she gets the newest movies. Sound comes over the FM stereo. trucks, rv's, vans have to park in row 12 and back.
Last year 2 friends froze to death watching "Closed For The Season"

$6 a carload? Wheres the advantage to sticking 4 people in the trunk then? I dont get it.

BTW I have absolutely no memory of about 1/2 of the movies I went to see at the drive in before the age of 19 . It's like I wasnt paying any attention at all to the movie or something. Weird.

LOL, brings back memories. First movie I went to at a drive-in was JAWS. 2 drive-ins left in Sothern Oregon that I know of and both are closed, no longer in biz. There used to be one in my hometown up until 2 years ago. They shut it down, sat vacant for 1 year, leveled it the second year and built assisted living complex for the elderly. As if we don't have enough elderly living here. About 65% retired people.

I miss the good ol' days.

We have one that is still operational and busier than hell all summer long. The same guy that runs the drive-in, just started up a theatre so he has movies going all year round now. I believe the screen is 80' high and 90' wide on ours. IT FRIGGIN HUGE!!!
The wife and I made it out once this year so our kids could see Spiderman. But one of them spilled and orange crush slush all over the back seat and the other passed out, so it was basically just the wife and I.

Things are going OK. I had to take a break from the truck for a few months, alot of home improvement going on. I should have a rear end coming in this weekend, and then after that I'll rebuild my front suspension. Kids take up most of the weekend.
