Went and helped a friend and his son start tearing apart a 70 that they bought in NE for $350. Eventual plans are for a 4/2 drop, beefy 350/th350 combo, painted midnight blue with yellow details. A couple of wierd things that I hadn't seen before on my 71 or a couple of 72's.

Like this power converter?

Basically got the bed off, grille off, and front clip ready to come off, next weekend we'll finish the clip, and pull the cab off. Got inspired by the pics of the powder coated frame, so that's what they want to do with it next month....I'll keep posting pics, and I'm sure we'll have questions so stay tuned....

Quite the truck you've got there..

The power converter looks like something the owner added, though it may have been a dealer option. Leaf springs were an option, and all 1 tons were leaf sprung as well. The carrier bearing is the heavier duty one, put with big blocks or TH400's or some combination thereof.. not sure exactly.

Yep, knew leaf's were available, just hadn't seen one. The option list says 350/TH350, so don't know why the heaver carrier is on there, possibly due to the leaf's. I think the power converter was a dealer installed, doesn't show on the option list, but the wiring looks better than an owner installed job.

I have had the one ton Longhorn and a 3/4 ton Longhorn (which is a one ton in cognito) and have NEVER seen a carrier bearing that looked like that.
That looks like a cheap autozone (or other parts house) replacement to me.

I've never actually seen one like that on a truck, either.. but it sure looks sturdier than the funky I-beam style they normally have.

Let me know if I can answer any questions for you guys as you go. I know there are a lot more knowledgeable guys on this board than me, but I am just now putting mine back together so I may be able to help.

It sure is fun once everything is cleaned up and powder coated. I like working with clean parts much better I found out.

Where do you live in CO? I use to race MX at Longmont. At the Berthoud track there on 1-25. I think Longmont is close to that...or is Longmont just North of Denver??? It has been a few years...

1971 Stepside - Yep, can't wait until we're at that point, where everything is clean! Longmont is about 8 miles south of Berthoud, and I used to race at that track when I was growing up in Denver. Been trying to talk my wife into letting me get the boys a couple of bikes to race up there, but so far no luck!

By the way, your powder coating is what has inspired my friend and his son to strip everything down and do the same thing, just in different colors. I'm sure we'll have tons of questions for everyone.

special70 gmc and longhornmail - As far as the carrier bearing, I think it came stock, since the crossmember is different as well from my 71.

My 70 short bed came with the same carrier bearing, had 402 th400 when new.
