1969 K20, K30 Transfer case question

I heard from a friend of mine that in 1969 on some of the 4x4's, gm had a divorced 205 case in them instead of a married set up. Has anyone seen any of these before? If so what is a fair price to pay for one so I don't get some over priced unit. He said he has one and I might buy it for my longhorn when I convert it to 4wd. Thanks for any help guys.

I've only seen divorced transfer case on pre 1967 trucks (1960-1966)

I don`t think it`ll be a NP205 if it`s GM.It could be from a Ford or Dodge,though,if it`s a NP205.They can be used on our trucks.They are desireable for their versatility but not really bringing any more money than any other unit.I`d get it for it`s rarity.It would allow using 2wd tranmissions and give a better front d-shaft angle on a lifted truck.

I just sold a NP205 from a 76 Ford f250, divorced, driverside drop, $100.
But ive never saw one on a 67 and up chevy.

Factory K30’s did not exist until 1977. Any K30 prior to then was a conversion by a GM upfitter hence, the divorced tcase.

It would make sense that if you found one of the uber-uncommon Napco trucks, it might have a divorced 205. But it wouldn't be worth any more than a Dodge or IH version.

Im using a dodge one in my burb. I like how I can use any trans I want with out having to hunt down adaptors to make it work.

There is a K30 in a yard where I am, can't think of what year it is, but it has a div. case and it's not a 205. Rockwell or something like that. They aren't really worth much inless someone is restoring one and looking for period correct stuff.

A div. case is a transfer that isn't attached the tranny. With this setup, you can use any tranny you want. Also 2wd tranny's can be cheaper and easier to find.

A transfer case that is not directly bolted up to the transmission, and requires a driveshaft between the trans and the t-case

I see, so a setup that has that adapter housing that couples the two and serves as the rear trans mount is not considered as divorced, correct?

I'm going with the divorced 205 for the win!

One...in '69 there was no NP205s on any GM truck.They were Rockwell T221s.

Two..Rockwells were divorced transfer cases in the first era of factory GM 4wds (60-66).I've heard that a few 67s may have still had a divorced t-case behind the SM420 but after that until GM switched to the NP205,the Rockwell t-case was married to the SM465,or a SM420 (in 67s) tranny.

I've never seen a GM with a divorced NP205 transfer case..If there is one in a GM 4wd,it's probably a Dodge NP205...I wonder why a GM tranny would want to be divorced from a Dodge transfer case? Guess it doesn't like Dodges....

That's probably a Dana 23, if it isn't a Rockwell. They were used in some of the Napco trucks.

I think that first statement is a little bold. I'm fairly certain that every automatic 1969 K5 had a NP205, and some of the stick shift ones did as well.

There were some 1969 trucks that had NP205's also. They had the oddball shifter that emulated the Rockwell shifter and came up next to the driver's leg instead of on the other side of the hump, which later NP205 trucks switched to.

I've seen one '69 K20 that had a NP205,it was probably a late '69 model year and had a 70 drivetrain since they started using 205s in 70.

When you have a divorced transfer case you have to align up the drive shaft between the trans and transfer case and the the transfer case and rear or it will vibrate drive at normal high way speed.
Pros and cons to everything.

Blazers are trucks,just not pickup trucks.Like a van is a truck,just not a pickup.Were there automatic`69 Blazers?I just figured all 4wds were manual up until`70 which is when and why the NP205 came in.

I ordered a new 4x4 Blazer in 1969 with a 350 engine and turbo 350 automatic transmission. GM was on strike at that time and I got tired of waiting on it so I purchased a new 1969 pickup off the dealers lot instead. So the answer is yes, automatics were available in 1969.

I saw a GMC Jimmy at the junk yard today that had a SM-465 with a Dana 20 tranfer case. I think it might have been a 69 or 70, what a weird transfer case shifter.

Sorry...It's been too many years. If I knew at that time, I've forgotten. Since I didn't wait for GM to settle the strike, I cancelled the order and bought a new 2 wheel drive pickup off their lot.

My 1969 GMC service manual shows only the Rockwell transmission on both the 3 speed and 4 speed manual transmissions. If I remember right, the Blazer, was the only 4 wheel drive to get an automatic transmission in 1969. Because the 1969 Blazer was introduced midyear and GM went on a lengthy strike shortly thereafter, very few Blazers were manufactured that year.
