Whats your opinion?

My son is looking to buy this 4x4 pickup to turn a buck on. He thinks he can get it for around 6k and sell it for 10k. Its a good looking pickup, BUT-- it was a 2 wheel long box made into a short box 4x4 with 3/4 ton axles. It does have a new crate moter (350) but there is no front driveline and a later style transfercase. This scares me about the resale. Whats your thoughts??:

Re: Whats your opinion?

It doesn't look to me like they got the bed mounting points right. It looks a little "swayback" to me. I'd be careful and inspect it closely if the frame has been cut.

Re: Whats your opinion?

I doubt he can get 10k since it's a convert to 4wd..just my opinion. It doesn't look to bad though.Having a front driveshaft atleast will help with a sale. But I wouldnt pay that much since it has a newer drivetrain, isn't a original 4wd,it has the frame cut,and there is no front driveline.

Re: Whats your opinion?

That's a clean truck but I don't see it bringing $10K. I think if he buys it he should keep it.

Thats what I thought. A friend said that the cab mounts might be bad, but the body lines look good to me. I'm worried about the frame splice.

Re: Whats your opinion?

No way, I wouldn't even pay 6 for it and there is no way unless he lies to someone about it that he would get more than that for it. Its just a bad idea to try and buy an old truck to try and turn a buck on it.

Re: Whats your opinion?

The good side is that it has alot of new parts. A group of guy's got together and built it to sell at the Portland swap meet. New moter--6 inch lift ans springs--new tires and wheels-- new bumpers and grill and a quick paint job. BUT ??

Re: Whats your opinion?

A lot of new parts won't mean much if they don't work in harmony( more than half of lifted trucks fall in this category). it looks to me like the tires are ready to chew the crap out of the front fenders, but I might be wrong.
as to having later model stuff, nobody who wants wheels that big wats original driveline, they would way rather have something which can take the abuse Np205, $1200 Dana 60 and $1200 crossover steering.
You might always find somebody who doesn't know they want all that.

Re: Whats your opinion?

I figure it`s worth what the guy`s selling it to your son for,at best. That`s why the guy`s asking that much.A constructed truck isn`t worth what a factory truck is worth, either.

6 g's is pushing it as it is now. Would be a different story if it was an original 4X4 shorty.

Re: Whats your opinion?

looks like when they hacked and wacked they missed the factory measurements on a shortbed so its basically just a mutt i'd be looking at it for a backwoods offroad vehicle to just use up and discard or as a parts vehicle alot of wich would make the scrapyard run// looks to be a pretty good cab and front clip($1500-$1800) and a used "new" motor ($1000-$1500) tiresa and rims ($300-$400)// so being real real generous i'd go maybe as high as $3000 for the shiney mutt

Re: Whats your opinion?

Opinions are inline with mine. Its discouraging though. I have a true 4x4 short box that I wanted to start on in the spring. I know it will cost me way more than 10,000 to build correctly.

You used the magic word, "correctly."

It's a nice mall crawler though. How much are they actually asking for it? If it was built right, it's probably worth 6K to the right buyer. But 10K?

No, he said "Mall-Crawler". I.E. a pretty, jacked up 4x4 with little or no real ability off-road. Built to be driven around town, kept spotlessly clean, and probably never see anything deeper than the occasional pothole.

Right?

Re: Whats your opinion?

Since you asked for opinions...

Hit your son over the head with a blunt object. If it was factory, maybe he could see 10k. With it already being slapped together, I wonder how much filler/rust is hidden under the rapid paint. I would hate to see him take a loss, or even worse, make an enemy by selling something to someone for 10k that they later discover is worth 2-3 tops..

were getting ready to do our truck in a month or so..and its gonna cost every bit of 20k. but its cheaper than a new truck and were gonna keep it in the family..so its all in how u look at it

Re: Whats your opinion?

Thats a sad ordeal in my eyes, if you are using the truck just for a profit and not to enjoy it for what it is. well, I guess I need to keep my opinions to myself, my personal opinion is that with what it has and how its been done , its not much worth much more than your original purchase price, as far as making ten g's , well, thats finding the right sucker

People do it with musclecars all the time --- i know what you mean though - the truck community is different than the Barrett-Jackson wannabe car flippers

Whats the big deal? There's nothing wrong in flipping. Actually, I'm in the process of flipping my first vehicle now. Going to University is tough and if I can make a few extra bucks, why not.

But back to question, I wouldn't do it. 10K is a bit much for a truck like that. Its not original so it will take away from value.
