Meet "Ace" (New Project)
OK, this is my version of accountability. I am going to do my best to get this thing going and drop progress pics into this thread. I bought it for $200 at an auction. I paid $50 to get it hauled to my house and these pictures are right after it got dropped off. Check out the scary tilt to the bed, the crappy interior and the absence of a motor. Feel free to post any suggestions (other than "Crush-it, paint it pink, or sell me that perfect windshield").

Re: Meet "Ace" (New Project)
Looks like you should put in a Chevy motor!
You cab is a clone of mine, same color, small window, black panels, and yellow under the purple/red. You got a better deal than me though, way to go!

Re: Meet "Ace" (New Project)
I've never seen as seat trashed on the passenger side worse than drivers side. Must have had a BIG dog livin' in there.

Get air in all four corner and setting level befor you diagnose that bed lean. You might find the bed mounts are fine, but you're in need of new can mounts. You may also find the frame-side brackets rusted through. Still a good score. If that yellow is the factory color, I would definately plan on using that. Cool staring point for a good price. Good Luck, Herb |

Re: Meet "Ace" (New Project)
Great project for the right price... So are you making a daily driver or show truck out of it?
Looking at all the colors and the shape of the interior, I would finish stripping it down and take it in for media blasting. That way all of the paint is off and you can see what you really have. Replace the rust with new panels, a little primer, and a little paint.... Good Luck!!!

I am loohing for a fender mount tire bracket. I you are not going to use the step side bed I could use the spare tire bracket. Looks like a nice truck. Good Luck with your build.

Re: Meet "Ace" (New Project)
I would have snapped it up for $250...there is a ton of potential in that truck.
Are those Ghia emblems on the fenders?

Re: Meet "Ace" (New Project)
All kinds of visions are running through my head. Drop in a good running used engine...replace the seat...paint the inside...prime it...slam it...throw on some polished old school U.S. Indys...

Re: Meet "Ace" (New Project)
Thanks for the suggestions, sounds like alot of you are thinking like me. I made some progress this weekend. I'm going to post pics tonight. The seat is already gone. The emblems--I have no Idea--I thought they were interesting. It looks like the original build says v-8, but it looks set up for a manual on the tree (although it has an automatic hacked in there right now). Anyone have one set up that way? I think I will probably put some miles on it while it is still wearing primer, so I'm still deciding on primer/paint colors.

Re: Meet "Ace" (New Project)
Looks like an original yellow truck like mine. Whoever painted it didn't prep the yellow so it will have to be stripped at least back to the yellow to get new paint, or even primer, to stick. If I were starting on mine all over again I'd go get a 6.0 LS series engine out of a newer truck and install it with the OD auto it comes with. They make a lot of power, run on regular gas and will pull down mpg in the 20s.

Re: Meet "Ace" (New Project)
OK, Here's the weekend's work. I tore out the rotten plywood bed and the rotten interior. I went to my new favorite shopping spot (teeitup's house) and got two doors and 5 matching original 15" wheels. I spent about $165.00. I started removing the old rubber (by hand--it's a great workout). I took the new doors apart and cleaned up the hardware. Here's a fun trick, take a door, lay it down, roll the window down and like magic, it will roll itself back up! The coil spring inside is a counterbalance, but I didn't realize how much weight needed counterbalanced and I almost cut my finger off trying to lubricate the window regulator components when it rolled itself back up.
The wheels are going to get blasted, then painted shiny black. I will run with them bare until I buy some moons to put on them. The drivers door is cracked around the top hinge so I cleaned it off and I'm going to weld it up. |
