3 speed floor shifter nightmare

Hello all. I know this has been covered to some degree, but I couldn't find what I needed in the archives.

I have a '65 Chevy truck, and a few years ago I replaced the column shift with a 3-speed floor shifter. I believe it was one of the Mr. G shifters from Advance Auto. As others have noted, it's a POS. One of the brackets that clamps on to the tranny shaft failed, and of course Mr. G don't sell no parts.

So.... I had to put the column shifter brackets back on. Now, the pattern is backwards (the Mr. G brackets face up, the stock brackets face down), and the throw is VERY long, but at least I can drive it.

I checked out a Hurst shifter, but the brackets seem to want to bolt into the end of the tranny shaft rather than clamp around it. So it would appear not to work.

Any suggestions? Should I get the tranny shafts drilled and tapped to accept the Hurst shifter?

Never have I had such a simple problem cause me such grief

"Ding!!"

Yes I used the Hurst, and it worked great, and super simple to install.

What is it exactly your having trouble with ??

My shifter came with enough levers to be compatible with different 3-speeds...cars and trucks.

Let me know what info you need....Wow that tranny crossmember looks like the way mine used to look....

I had all that "GM Rustproofing" removed at the steam-cleaners.....

Re: 3 speed floor shifter nightmare

Chiefrocka,

This is the shifter I was sold. As you can see, the shift arms bolt on to the transmission shaft.

On my truck, the transmission shafts are splined, and the shift arms slip over them and clamp down (see pix above).

And another question while I've got the pros around: the truck has always jumped out of 3rd gear. I'm told it's a synchronizer. Should I repair the transmission or replace it?
