Any good places in DFW area to rebuild a motor?

I have a 350 that came out of my dads 73 Camaro R/S.

I wanted to get it rebuilt so that I can throw it in the truck my dad gave me. It is complete minus manifold but I am unsure what condition it is in. The car stopped running about eight years ago for some unknown reason.

What options are there available in the DFW area.

Depends on what you want...the big rebuilders [like City Motor] are really only good for stock motors. While they do have the best rep among the big guys, if you want real quality and bigger horsepower than stock, then go to a small shop rebuilder instead.

If you are just outfitting a daily driver, City Motor will work just fine and cost you less in the long run. For any other use, I prefer to get someone who operates close to where I live and has a vested interest in not having me show back up with a motor that doesn't run.

This is who I used for my big block. He built it over 5 years ago and put it on the dyno it got 440hp. He is not cheap. Sad part is the motor is still not in the truck.

I've taken at least 5 motors to City Motor in Dallas, I give them the cam I want and do the prem longblock, have not had any problems with the motors and I treat them very harshly. For a mild street motor/ daily driver you can't go wrong

Stay away from Blaine's! I went thru hell and back with them. They put the wrong main bearings in it, then the second long block had a frezze plug that leaked from the get go! I was so fed up I put a rubber plug in it and drive the piss out of it. I hope it blows soon, I have almost 2K miles on it. I'll go with a GM crate motor the next go around.

I agree with the Blaine's thing but not the GM crates. They are not as powerful as they are advertised to be and certainly not worth what you pay. Building one locally is a much better idea.

When you are ready to build a motor, let me know, I know a guy in East Dallas who does a lot of work for Kim Barr [the local racing engine builder phenom].

Just a heads up to Buffalo Elk..Walt's there in Terrell sells Blaine's engines. They lead you to believe they build them, but they don't. They buy the short blocks and heads seperate, just so they know for sure they didn't sell you a .60 over block. Walts treated me right but we are a big customer of theirs, I think that is the only reason they bent over backwards to remedy Blain's screw up! In a nut shell don't buy from Blaine's in Dallas!!!!

The GM performance parts engines are rated higher HP than what they really are? GRRR! That blows...What would a late model swap run the guy asking about the engine rebuild?

I had a 1978 El Camino SS and a 1986 Monte Carlo SS back before I had these trucks. The Elky's motor was a 325hp built locally by a guy in Arlington. It would pull high 14's in the 1/4 when I got it. I added shorty headers to the mix and it felt a bit faster still.

I had the lowly POS 305 HO in the MCSS and it was starting to develop the dreaded lower rod knock. I polled all the gurus of the day [back then it was the guys on the MCSS list and the G-body list]...big mistake.

They talked me into buying a new crate motor so off to GOAutocenter.com I went. $2900 later I had a 350 HO with roller rockers and roller timing chain. I spent another grand on the peripherals and loaded it into the MCSS. Those cars had a 3.73 axle and a 2004r [another big mistake leaving that tranny in there...even though my buddy 'rebuilt' it for me].

Anyway, without going into the tranny mess, we tuned the motor [which should have had 350 hp after the cam change] and went to break her in. Got that done and afterwards I was shocked to learn that my Elky would stomp the MCSS in a race...my guess is it woulda been a car length. With that 3.73 the Elky shoulda been dusted good cause it only had a 3.08.

Another example....had another friend with a ZZ4 in his truck...was told by another buddy that it wasn't all that he thought they were suppposed to be either.

Last time I rebuilt a motor it cost me $1100 for a 300 hp RV cammed 350. A guy I talked to recently told me he could build a 400hp 383 stroker for less than $2400.

interested in sharing the guy in east dallas? i'm trying to decide on latemodel take-out and a 350 rebuild.
