Manual steering
Does it exist for these trucks? If so does anyone know who has 'em?

I've seen lots of these trucks with manual steering. Mostly early to mid seventies with the strait six engines. We had several fleet trucks here in that body style with manual steering. I'm sure if you search the junkyards you can still find one somewhere.

lol, so you have none of the things that ease yer driving, but you do have the A/C... weird!!!
Edit: how does yer steering feel, compared to a similar but PS-equipped truck? Never driven a manual steering vehicle, how hard is the truck to make turn at low speed? Does it handle better at high speed?

I have manual steering,,,,, And I will soon be getting power steering, Ive got the brackets, pump all I need is a box and hoses and belt ,, for a 250 L6, And Im good to go.

both my 77 and 78 c10's have manual steering and brakes with 250 l6's. 77 is four on the floor and 78 is three on the tree. at first they are awkward to drive if your used to ps and pb. but you soon get used to it and dont even think about it. at least thats how i was.

Over half the vehicles I've owned were manual steering, including a SWB Jeep CJ5 with 35" Gumbo Monster Mudders on it. Was a right PITA to parallel park, but other than that it was fine.
Most manual steering boxes have more turns lock to lock, don't they? Which means a lower gear ratio between the steering wheel and the tire angles, right?

If you want to find out just get going a pretty good speed in your truck, put it in neutral, and kill the ignition, the power steering will not work, I've had it happen to me a few times when I ran out of gas...

i have power steering on my trucks now but in years/trucks past i have had several without. manual steering really only helps you when youre paralell parking or in tight places. as long as the car is moving the steering isnt bad it is just a tad harder to turn. as you move the faster you go the steering operation eases... when youre in a parking spot trying to turn the wheel or paralell parking then you build your bicepts quick

A friend used to have one with a straight six, and manual steering.
I have had a lot of cars with manual steering. The key is simply to remember to make sure you are moving when you turn the wheel. Even creeping makes it much easier to turn the wheel. As the others said, parallel parking is aboutthe only time you can't do that. Slonaker |

Manual steer, lowered, 9" wide front tires & sports steering wheel = Quick builder of upper body strength.
This was how it used to be, have change to power now. With manual open road driving is fine but parking is hard with fat rubber

What wheels/tires you got? Mine stopped alright with the 245/60-15 tires, those are smaller than stock tho. With stock tires it will still stop, only not as fast as you'd want it to. Slap on anything oversized and forget about doing e-stops or freeway brake tests .

15x8's on front with 245/60/15
15x10's 295/50/15 as long as the truck is moving its easy, but it is a workout if not moving! at high speed it great (one finger on the wheel) the breaks the harder you push the faster you stop |

Not quite the same, the gear ratio in the steering boxes is different so a disabled PS system will be tougher to turn the wheel of than a stock-manual system. I can however turn the steering wheel when stopped, even with the 32x10.50 mud slingers I have, so I guess manual steering won't be too bad... What will be real fun will be blocking off the hydroboost port that feeds the steering box - does anyone know if the steering box has the fluid flow through it all the time, or it gets pressure at the inlet but releases fluid out only when turning?

Is there no way you can take the input from the power steering box and put it direct to the brakes? In other words, bypass the steering? Or are there two outputs from the pump? If so, just take the output and put it directly back into the input.
And yes, the pump is always pumping. It's the steering box that controls the amount of power taken out of it.

The output from the pump goes straight to the brakes, and only from there it feeds the steering. There are two return lines - one from the brakes, and one from the steering. My concern would be if I disconnect the steering pressure line and block that port off at the brakes, won't that create some massive backpressure? Cause the brakes return line works only when dumping fluid after brake apply, normally there's little to no flow through it and everything goes to the steering...

My 82 3/4 ton 6pop 3 on tree has manwel steering. Hate it. Impossible to turn those 8 plys on concrete sitting still, particularly with a load of sand up towards the front. Fine on the road.
Only thin I've ever had that was worse wa 69 Impala 4 door big block with PS pump blown and L60's on the front. The one thing I wil do when I redo it is install PS. If anyone is foolish enough to want to swap thir L6 pump and a PS box for my manual stuff just let me know. Last edited by D13; 11-09-2007 at 09:41 AM. |
