Clutch Rod Hole Plug

I can't find a source for a firewall plug for the clutch rod hole. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Re: Clutch Rod Hole Plug

That would have been a good way to go but I'm a little past that point already. Also I want to keep my options open for a 5 speed later on.

The fram fuel filter looks good on the head, but I would worry about it getting hot.

If you subscribe to the board you can post a WTB in the classifieds, I'm sure someone will have one. It's 25.00 you won't regret spending!

Re: Clutch Rod Hole Plug

I've seen the plugs that Kenney's sells. If I recall correctly, they were a metal bolt on affair. Seem like I saw a plastic plug similar to the grommets used in the other firewall openings that snaps in on a '71 GMC at my local salvage yard.

The original ones did indeed bolt on. It's a metal plate with rubber gasket on the backside.

Re: Clutch Rod Hole Plug

I guess I thought it was a plastic push in plug too. Since It's a bolt in I can make one out of some aluminum plate I have laying around. The same stuff I used for the heat shield in the back of my fuel filter in the above photo. Thanks everyone for your help.

The headers are original 1981 Corvette stainless manifolds. I removed the bolt on stamped heat shields and cut off the AIR tubes. Then I welded in the holes and coated them with Eastwood's stailess header coating. Corvettes used similar manifolds up through the 80s and 90s until the LS1 engines came out in '97. Most are 2 1/2" outlet but the '81s are 2". They are cheap to buy used at swap meets and make a cheap stainless header if you don't mind spending some manual labor time on them.

I've been told that 67 - 69 were plastic plugs, and the later ones were the metal plate.

I go along with that since there are no screw holes around the big hole.

I have a 70 cab that HAD a plastic one. My son seemed to think the only way to get it out was in pieces.

That interesting. I've never seen any A/T trucks in yards around here that had the mounting screw holes. Maybe it varied by factory?

Re: Clutch Rod Hole Plug

My 70 doesn't have any bolt holes where the cover should have been installed, so it is my belief that there was a plastic option at one time. I was going to try to take a clutch boot, and "install" some sort of cover inside it to plug my hole without having to bolt anything on. Some of the new cars use large plastic plugs/clips with a washer looking side to them. I thought you could use one of those installed in a clutch boot to seal up the hole.

Re: Clutch Rod Hole Plug

67-70 had a plastic plug. I have a couple. Not for sale. But my view is that the heat from the manifold warped them and they just fell out. The plug only came in grey.

Re: Clutch Rod Hole Plug

I have both a rubber piece that I picked up from GMC Paul's, and I recently acquired a section of firewall that indeed has the metal bolt-on affair. The metal bolt-on is simply a lemon-shaped piece of metal with holes in either end and some kind of foam stuff on the side that faces inside of the cab.
