4 speed manual?

I got a 1968 c20, its got a 250ci in it with a 4 speed on the floor. I want to know what the 4 speed is, I've been told its a muncie but im not sure. Im 99% its not a granny-low. The sheft pattern is
1 3
2 4 R

Also, I's like to know what rear end is in it, its an 8 lug pattern.

Re: 4 speed manual?

It's an SM465 most likely..The 3spd with granny low first gear..making it a 4spd.The rear axle is probably a Eaton HO52

Re: 4 speed manual?

67s and maybe some 68s had the SM420..this is a 465 though since the shift pattern is :
1 3
2 4 R

SM420 pattern has reverse on the left next to first

Re: 4 speed manual?

If it's like my granny tranny it's 0-6 mph in half a second. 0-60mph in half an hour.

Re: 4 speed manual?

You are not only on the edge but correct. Who knows what the earlier muther truckers have done to make it work for them. Pics of the body, label, and markings make it at least identifiable. The gears inside may have changed through the years but the outside has a particular pressence............. I do remember a granny with a hot 283 in front of her that would rattle your head with the 4 inch outlet pipes in a 66.

Re: 4 speed manual?

It could be an SM-420 or a New Process NP-435-GA 4 speed in 1967. The NP-435-GA had the shift pattern you described. The later SM-465 also had that pattern.

The SM-420 has a large bulge on the passenger side, and a driver's side PTO plate. It has all the way to the left and down reverse.

The NP-435-GA has a large aluminum top plate, and has a passenger side PTO plate. It has all the way to the right and down reverse.

The SM-465 has PTO plates on both sides. It has all the way to the right and down reverse.

I always crawl under them and look at the PTO plate. That is the quickest way to ID them.

Re: 4 speed manual?

No posi. There was a locker called the "No Spin".Your truck`s pretty intact. Is the option sheet there or ledgible? It would be listed,if from factory. Also, there miht still be a label on the back wall in the corner behind the passenger side.
