Question About Shaved Door Handles - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have shaved the doors on my 71 truck, now I just need to figure out how I want to get into the truck. I have 2 choices, either solenoids or hook up an alarm system to the power windows which would roll them down and I could reach in and open the door with the inside handle. The only problem I've heard with doing this is that the power window motor burns up due to the constant power going to it. Has anyone heard this? Is anyone doing this now and having sucess with it? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I used a remote kit from ebay. $99.99 came with everything I needed. It is cool as I tell my students that it is voice activated and they talk to the door and say open, then I push the remote in my pocket. Most of them bought it. Very funny trick. Go with remote entry it works from far away and is very slick. Easy to install.

I am trying to stay away from using solenoids. I have noticed alot of the street rods use the power window method as a way of getting in. It seems simple, hit the remote button which rolls the window down and just reach in and open the door.

You can use solenoids and still use a remote for both doors and windows - seems easier to me to just open the door with the remote rather than the two step process of rolling down the window and then reaching in. However, the answer to your inquiry is that the circuit to the power window motor is not complete unless the window is going up or down. Simply having power available without the motor being activated will not reduce it's longevity. Don't forget to have a "manual" backup system in case the motor burns out or the battery goes dead. Most use a cable hidden under the car/truck for that purpose.

Doesnt sound like a good solution if you are going to drive it in the rain... Street rods have smaller window openings = less water entry... I and a fan of solenoids with back up manual cables..
