Putting in a 454
Would I be able to drop a 454 from a 1978 Chevy 1ton into my 84 half ton without having to get a different transmission or doing any changes to the trans?
I have the 4spd manual with the granny gear and the 1978 is a auto trans

Re: Putting in a 454
You would need a 454 flywheel and an 11" clutch, unless you already have those. The bellhousing pattern is the same, so as long as the flywheel fits inside it you should be ok there. I used the 85 454 mounts in my 76, and a 700R4 from Diesel, and it fell in like it was meant to.

Re: Putting in a 454
i think the motor mounts for the big block are the same...when i bought the new ones for y 1 ton, they were the same as the ones from my 84, but man my 454 did nto want to drop over them, took forever to get it to drop in over the new mounts..

Re: Putting in a 454
I had to use the 454 stuff, but I had one of my Pontiac 400s in it before. So everything is different for mine. As long as you have th donor there it should be too tough. Are you planning to run the power steering? The 84 should have metric fittings where the 78 will probably have SAE. The return line isnt a problem, they swap easily, but the pressure line is a bit tougher. You can unscrew the adapter from the back of the pump, and install it in the other pump. BBC power steering mounts differently than SBC.
