Inline-6 Experts please help!

Hey guys, this is my first post, I've been following the build threads here for a few weeks now, I'm already an addict, and It's motivated me to restore, if you can call it that (rattle can)

I've been cleaning up my project truck, pulled the old 250 out, began the process of de-greasing 36+ years of crud from the block and components. I've ran into a couple problems:

1. I have pictures of all the codes I can find, and If anyone needs, I have the codes on the head, and intake/exhaust as well. Apperantly the engine code is an Olds code?

2. The block appears to have been fixed Brazed my grandfather says, neither of us have any knowledge on the subject of block repairs.

Back History: My truck (a 1971 Chevy c20)was purchased brand new by the guy I bought it from. He says he had a short block put in, which kind of confirms why my 3 day search turned up only that the engine has Olds codes.

I apologize for any blurriness in my pics, my camera is like 2mps, and I'm really unable to find anything on the suffix on the engine, any help is very appreciated, thanks! - Branden

That's not a olds, It's for sure a Chevrolet 250 6 CYL...olds didn't make a 6cyl...George

I come up with a '64-'76, 230-250. but, since the 230 was discontinued before '71, it'd be a 250, like cyclone said.

olt timer used to make those repairs like that all the time , I think they called pining a crack ? where that one was cracked is in a spot where the water pumpe housing when installed will help hold it , really it probably won't give you any trouble but as for myself as common as 250 sixcylinder's are I'd just get another one to build , if you have any type of older junkyard around they will have ten of them , put a wanted ad in a local paper and someone will give you one (LOL) everyone don't love the little feller's like I do , they are a favorite for me ,, 327's are my favorite V8 good luck on it ,,,,,,,,,,,

Thanks for the help so far! I'm already and addict of this site.. the build section of this site has given me so many ideas (only reason I'm working on this 3/4 ton)

I desperately want it to be a Chevy block.. for some reason i feel dirty about oldsmobile stuff.. but the engine code? I can't find it anywhere.

As for the 327s if this block does turn out to be gone. My grandfather has already mentioned wanting to put a 327 in.. are they really that good? I hate to sound like a noob about this but my DD is a toyota tacoma, so i need my american truck fix via this project

if you're going to be diving into the world of straight 6's, www.inliners.org is THE place to be. not saying this site isn't amazing, but, that site is speciailized for inlines.

and it is a Chevy block, i'm fairly positive.

You would be doomed if you had a F**D...LOL, Take the inline to a machine shop and let them check the block and see if it was repaired right, If they say it was, Build it and try to ware it out, They are tough little motors... To the board....George

Here's proof. You can rest at ease, it is absolutely 100% without a shadow of doubt a Chevy L6 block. Olds never made an inline 6 after the 40's.

The 250 is a Chevrolet built engine, but could be installed in other GM products of the era.GM liked to share engines with other divisions.The number stamped into the distributor pad is most important. It looks like it says "BD" , according to my books it was orginally installed in a68 or 69 El Camino with manual transmission.

Just for the future reference, GM re-used a lot of stamped codes on engines from year to year. The casting number is always the final word, because they are always a unique number. The casting numbers are the best way to ID any of the engine parts.

The casting number-3921968 says it is a 64-76 230 or 250 Chevy. If it has flat top pistons it is a 230 and if the piston tops are dished it is a 250. The numbers to the left of the casting number say it was manufactured on Jan. 9, 1969 on conveyor line #2 at 7'o clock. the am or pm is cut off of your photo so I can't tell if it was 7:00 AM or 7:00 PM. For the record A99= A is January, B is Feb., C is Mar. etc. 9 is the 9th day of the month and the second 9 is the year, in this case 1969 because this casting number was made from 1964 thru 1976.
