Re: gmc hood ornament

I looked in your profile, still too small for me.That`s a great looking truck,BTW.There were no hood ornaments offered on these trucks.Although I can`t see it,it`s prolly from a car.The 1st gen. Monte carlo ornaments were popular add-ons to these trucks awhile back.It had a small black oval with Chevrolet in cursive.I guess yours doesn`t say Chevy, though,or you wouldn`t wonder if it was original.Maybe a Sprint ornament.

Double click on the picture. It will show you an enlarged version.

Certainly a unique feature if it is stock. I've never seen any type of ornament on any of the 67-72 trucks other than lettering in all my years of looking at them.

I wonder if it was bondoed or welded in. What does the uncerside look like?

Any sign of being worked on?

Re: gmc hood ornament

t5here's been a few guys with chevy trucks over the years come and go on here asking about there hood ornimants... I wouldn't be suprised if dealers were adding them... but, as stated above, there was no factory offering.

You can tell the way its mounted and fits perfect it has to be factory. I purchased from original owner in 1980 65,000 miles now has 372,000 miles. Truck is totally stock . Never been painted. I will get some closer piccs. It appears to have typical mounting fasteners used then. You have to remove hood latch mechanism to get to it.No welding bondo or anything.

Re: gmc hood ornament

if it's factory, it's a one of one and undocumented.
just becouse you got it off the original owner doesn't mean anything.
Looked at a truck locally... seller saying I got it from the original owner... and he said he installed a 454.
Gues what, it was a 402.
guy on here has a blue GMC... a 71 or 72... his dad is the original owner. Swore up and down it was repaired as original after a minor fender bender... swore up and down. It has an earlier grill on it and he swore it was like that originally.

Lotsa things fit that were never factory options... like the glove box lights that I've made so much money on. Never installed on the assembly line in any 67 - 72 truck... but they fit perfect.

Re: gmc hood ornament

Thats possible Longhornman but if you look at it it fits perfect on the curve of the hood. An older gentleman owned it when I purchased it in 80.I would just like to find out I have just always wondered about it because it certainly looks factory the 27 years I have owned it.

Re: gmc hood ornament

Like I said, there really were no hood ornaments, really. What does it take to drill a couple hole and put a hood ornament on?Just because it fits doesn`t mean it`s original. There`s no paint involved and,of course,no welding. You can bolt an Impala steering wheel on with no modification, tommorrow or 35 years ago.It will fit like factory, but won`t be for a truck. There`s barely any curve to the hood and most hoods and fenders have about the same. It`s not uncommon to find hood ornaments swapped around.
Cdowns is prolly right, since there`s no medallion.Fender "guides" were common and that`s prolly what you have. They would be fastened with speednuts like other factory trim.
