What in the $%^& - undercoating?
I was looking at a truck and (as always) - I asked for pix of the key locations...
He (the current owner) sent me pix of the underside of the cab... I have never seen anything like this...anybody know what the heck this stuff is? I realize that it is some type of undercoating, but why... I asked for pix of the floor pans on the inside - haven't seen those yet - - that should be interesting. rockers are solid (replaced/rivets) - kick panels are solid (replaced/rivets)...windshield seam/upper metal area - no rust... Inner passenger rocker - (from pictures below) seem to be gone... I have NEVER seen this on the bottom of a cab - figured some of you others may have come across this...is this a red flag or should I wait to see the floor pan pix? Thanks again for your assistance everybody! |

Re: What in the $%^& - undercoating?
I would doubt how solid the rest is on the other side of the undercoating if the inner rocker is gone.

Re: What in the $%^& - undercoating?
I was thinking fiberglass??? If there is a patch that big I expect the metal in the area is "gone".

Re: What in the $%^& - undercoating?
Avoid!! Doesn't look good from here. That rocker looks bad and appears to continue into the floor pan.

Re: What in the $%^& - undercoating?
At first glance I thought that it was some sort of tar, but I would have to guess that it is probably bondo

Re: What in the $%^& - undercoating?
Don't know what that is..........
Many years ago I had a 1970 Buick Electra 225 beater special that had holes in the floorboard that were big enough for Fred Flintstone to use. I put some old scraps of thin sheet aluminum siding under the carpet, and then crawled underneath with a can of that foam insulation they sell at your friendly local home improvement center, and filled in all the gaps from the "patch panel" I made. It looked ugly as heck, but it kept my feet from getting soaked on rainy days, and reduced draftiness quite well.

Re: What in the $%^& - undercoating?
unless your looking at it for other parts i sure wouldn't buy it for a builder unless you already have a cab. i would much rather spend a little more and start with a soliad cab. it will cost less and you will end up with a better truck done faster

Re: What in the $%^& - undercoating?
That looks like tar to me. I once owned a CJ7 that had the whole underside coated with tar and it looked exactly like that. Major pain to get off!

Re: What in the $%^& - undercoating?
Update - she made it to ebay - strangely enough - the pix of the undercoating didn't make the auction -
I asked repeatedly to see the metal of the floor pans and he kept saying that it seemed like the rubber mat was 'glued' to the truck and he didn't want to rip it... I guess the rivets for the 'body work' should be the key to look out for... Here is the auction: ebay auction #330189270286 He was asking 1200 on CL... The guy was nice enough to take the pictures of what I asked to see (other than the floor pans)...so take that for what it is worth. |

The whole truck looks like a patched up bondo buggy... There are many much nice trucks out there for a little more coin.

Re: What in the $%^& - undercoating?
If its a good enough deal, replace the floor with a goodmark peice, it will take care of all the weird issues.

Re: What in the $%^& - undercoating?
floor pan and rocker panels are very easy and straight forward to replace, i assume that thats bondo but if the rest of the truck is solid and cheap you can fix all that for about 50 bucks and one days work, how ever if the floor is that bad then the kick panel and lower door pillar is more than likley shot too still though its an easy fix, i replaced kick pannel, floor pan, inner outer rocker, cab support and rocker and lower door pillar all in one day and it was the first time i done sheet metal work, i must say it looks professional except for my hand made floor panel but hay aslong as its solid metal its just getting covered with carpet and undercoating any how im not going to sema or anything one thing about it there aint no rust....
