Re: 350 Turbo or 700r4 Which one????

T350s are typically a little tougher.

however, the 700r4 has lockup torque convert. and overdrive, I.E FUEL MILAGE

i have a T350 lol

Re: 350 Turbo or 700r4 Which one????

junkyard trannies i'd go with th350// either junkyard tranny usually means redoing the job in short order tho
but a quality rebuilt 700r4 would be the much prefered option for lower rpm usage on the motor the cruising factor on the hiway and gas mileage

we need to hear about your engine, the planned use of the truck, the rear end gearing and tire size, 2 wheel drive/4 wheel drive budget and expectations all before anyone can give you solid advice.

Re: 350 Turbo or 700r4 Which one????

The engine will be a 350 - 4bolt. Running Comp Cams 268H camshaft. Edelbrock heads. This is just going to be a warmed up street motor. Edelbrock performer intake to match the heads. I plan to cruise the truck to work which is about 10 miles from my front door to the Air Force base each day. not sure about the rear end gearing. i want a gear for a little fun. I have not got that far yet.

Re: 350 Turbo or 700r4 Which one????

With the 268 cam you'll want to make sure you a 3.73 or 4.10 rearend gear or it will buck and feel gutless at anything less than 55 mph or so with the 700R4 in OD. If it's in the budget, go with the 700R4 with a Vette servo for firm, positive shifts, and go with 3.73+ gears. That would be the most economical way to go, and the low first gear of the 700R4 would make you smile with a healthy small block!

Re: 350 Turbo or 700r4 Which one????

i went from a 700r4 to a th350 because my 700 blew up, the 700 is fantastic for off the line starts with its 3.08 first gear, and with 4th gear, highway driving was a blast, i had 3.73 gears, perfect combo IMHO. 350 has good strength stock, and just like a 400 it is plug and play, the 700r4 and the 200 are not plug and play, you have to get these dialed in just right, best if done by a proffesinal, i had to do a bunch of things just to be able to get the 700r4 to work in my 71 such as throttle valve kit $40, adjustable tv cable $30, carb linkage (this has to be correct) $40, pressure gauge $30, internal and external wiring and brake switch, etc for lock up convertor $70, plus the price of a rebuilt or new 700 which will be a couple hundred $ higher than the 350. if you only drive 10miles each way , i would do the 350, it will take you like a year at least to break even on gas money from the extra $ you will though into a 700 versus a 350. i have heard more than one guy go through 3 700's before getting one to work right. i personally thought 3.73's were to low for my th350 setup, i think some custom setup in the mid 3's would be ideal for performance with a th350. 3.07's if you want better gas milage. i just wanted to throw a tranny under my truck and go, thats why i went with the th350. note- these are my personal experiences, opinions and thoughts no offense to anyone.

Re: 350 Turbo or 700r4 Which one????

If you're doing it yourself, are a transmission amateur, if money is an issue, and your commute is only 10 miles --- The th350 will be a good choice -- mileage can vary between 12 and 15 with a small block, so unless you drive it to Canada, that wont be a prob.

The 700 is a better choice all the way around if you want to spend the money on it --- but if its not set up just so-so, the mileage wont be any better than a th350 and a properly tuned motor

Thats my opinion -- if you only have 5 or 600$ to dump on it - go 350, $1500 to spend, 700 all the way

Re: 350 Turbo or 700r4 Which one????

I killed (2) TH350's that were "built" for mild horsepower. One had a shift kit with blah blah blah to make it last with a little HP. Both time the intermediate sprag crapped out on me.

I now have a 700R4 and love it. It is built to handle 700HP, which I am AT LEAST 300 shy of.

My $.02.

I dont know how you did that, but that is undeniably an isolated incident.

I have a stock th 350 with a slightly loose (2000 stall) converter that has been living quite comfortably behind a 450 horse, 505 big block in one of my vehicles -- it gets driven several thousand miles a year and has run in the high 12's at the track with a very mild shot of N2o -- blazing the right rear 3/4 of the way down

And Th 350 equipped vehicles have a whole lot more succes stories than failure stories -- but the 700 is a nice transmission if its re-done properly -- stock, its only meant for vehicles up to maybe 275 hp
