Question Broken front drive shaft CV

Whats the best solution for this. Its the second time I have broken the center part of the "CV" on my front driveline. Im talking about the assembly at the transfer case for the front driveline. The U-joints still look OK. Can the "CV" be eliminated? Is it even called a "CV"? Im sure someone makes something better. Thanks.

It is really called Double Cardan Joint. They are not typically a problem. How have you broken it? Do you have a lift? Is the slip joint in the front shaft in good condition?

Re: Broken front drive shaft CV

Typically these are broken because of binding, either from too much lift or droop when 'wheeling.

Re: Broken front drive shaft CV

Never broke one but upgraded to a 1 ton front shaft last year when I needed another front drive line due to the existing one didn't have a long enough slip in it...guess how I found out.

Surprised to hear your breaking the front shaft that way though, must be all that Spokane sand or something.

Re: Broken front drive shaft CV

I too have never broke that part of my driveline. But I did upgrade my drivelines, got them from HighAngle Driveline here in Cali. I would take a measurement from pinion yoke to T-case yoke and have one made and get the beefest one you can afford with the CV

Re: Broken front drive shaft CV

Never seen one break. It`s strange that a u-joint took what that yoke couldn`t.Let`s see the damage.

Yeah its weird. I hope its just "one of those things". I'm going to rebuild it with regular parts for now. I'll tear it down tonight and post some carnage pix tommorrow.

Re: Broken front drive shaft CV

They strarted using the dbl cadon joint when they "married" the trans and t-case which shortened the front driveshaft. The purpose is they handle a steeper angle.Guys are adding a second one on the other end of the front shaft and on rear shafts when lifting alot,on shorter rigs, and when going with doublers(rear shaft).

Re: Broken front drive shaft CV

The weld-on yoke (to the driveshaft) failed and took the centering yoke with it. On the picture of the new parts the arrow points to the "cup & pin" on the weld-on yoke that connects to the "ball" on the centering yoke. This is where something went wrong. Hopefully it was just old and fatigued. Both u-joints are perfect and the outside case yoke doesn't have any binding/impact marks.

Re: Broken front drive shaft CV

I would guess that someone put new u-joints in and did not replace the rest of the worn out parts. That probably led to your failure.

I did put new HD u-joints in not long ago but seriously...who is going to cut off the driveline welded yoke and replace it if its not broke?
