Factory gear ratio options for Dana axle on 3/4 ton

I popped the cover on my Dana rear axle today to service the innards and clean it up a bit.

It's a 3:54 ratio. Is this a stock ratio option or do I have a later rearend in my junk?

That's a stock ratio. It's actually a great all around gear for a 3/4 ton unless you're gonna be doing some real heavy towing.

Thanks for the quick response. I actually could not be any happier with the ratio. I tend to do a good bit of highway driving.

Re: Factory gear ratio options for Dana axle on 3/4 ton

I agree. I am going to probably drop the gear ratio down to a 3.42 in my 67 C-30. That is the closest thing you can get in the 14 bolt I put in there. You put a 265/75R16 or a 285/70R16 on the 3/4 ton, and it will roll out with 3.54's!

Yep, I roll on 265/75/16's and my truck cruises.

Ahhh.. I didn't know that. Good to know though. What was common behind the 351E V6's?

I'm sure if you really wanted it, you could have ordered it w/o the BB.

Re: Factory gear ratio options for Dana axle on 3/4 ton

Had 3.54 in my 70 3/4 GMC 350/400 coils rear and in a 71 Chev 3/4 350 coils rear. Not just BB. Was the factory ratio if you had a 3/4 BB anything else was an option. Mind you were talking dana diffs here and not eatons.

Re: Factory gear ratio options for Dana axle on 3/4 ton

My`72 K2500 has 3.54s and it loves the hiway for a heavy 4wd.I have 12.50/33s and it catches second if I`m on it (with power-loc).It hauls great, too. That ratio works with o/d just as well. From all I`ve gathered, the highest gearing with o/d that leave grunt enough to tow/haul is 3.42.That`s what goes into my`67 shortbed w/M22.It`ll roll pretty good like that.I think 3.08 would be too high for a manual. With any luck,it`ll end up with a GearVendors unit.

Re: Factory gear ratio options for Dana axle on 3/4 ton

K, I agree with you on gear ratios.

At heart, I'm an 88-98 Chevy truck guy. I worked on a million of them in the mid 90's as a dealership mechanic. A huge majority of them had 3.42 and overdrive. It's a perfect combination in my opinion.

As a side note, GM produced millions of 305 powered trucks in the early to mid 80's with the 700R4 overdrive and 2.73 rear gears. Talk about sick. I've converted a lot of them over the years to straight turbo 350's from the 700 and the 2.73 is still too tall even without OD.

Re: Factory gear ratio options for Dana axle on 3/4 ton

I worked for a company that ordered three`81 trucks, all red/almond two-tone.Two were 1/2t and a 3/4t.The 1/2t trucks had the 2.73s/305/4spd manual drivetrain.I used granny to start off.I couldn`t imagine those staying in o/d on any grade at all.The masonry crew had the 3/4t at first, until we disolved that crew and started subcontracting. Then,I got that truck...350/3.73/4spd manual.I liked that one.

Re: Factory gear ratio options for Dana axle on 3/4 ton

I agree... that 3.54 (46:13) in my Dana is great... I just discovered that in my 72 c20... seems like a great all around ratio... now if I could just get my factory tach to read correctly I'd be set...
