Found out about my engine goodies today

Got to talk with the previous owner about my new truck today. The engine was rebuilt about 10k miles ago and in the process it was bored and stroked to 383 cu in. It has vortec heads, an edelbrock 600 CFM carburetor with electric choke, 410 gears, a 700R4 transmission, 364 Comp cams, and KB performance pistons. It sounds pretty mean and definately has some power. How much I dont know but the PO claims 400 hp. I have a hard time believing that, (I have a car with 500hp) but maybe 300 hp. What do you think it should make? Is this a normal route to take when rebuilding the engine?

Re: Found out about my engine goodies today

That totally depends. If the PO built the engine ask him what cam he put in (lift and duration) and if the vortec heads are just stockers or if the have larger valves. If they do have larger valves ask the size. A 383 has the potential to make 500 horsepower fairly easily. If you want power out of a small block chevy 80% of it is in the heads and valve train. Im getting ready to build a 383 for my stepper and will have it dynod when completed and am hoping for 500hp, but Ive invested quite alot of money in my heads. But from the sounds of it, vortec heads with a 600cfm carb, doubt 500hp.

Re: Found out about my engine goodies today

400 is not that far out of range, but all depends on the stuff you didn't mention. Intake Manifold, Headers, Mufflers, and tune up. A carb can make or break you on this stuff if you haven't seen a dyno. You could be giving up 30 hp because of jets, or because your secondaries are not opening all the way or other stupid stuff. Dyno it and find out... or hit up a drag strip and tune it at the same time. You can estimate hp with weight and mph at the strip.
