72 cheyenne10 4X4 BIG BLOCK?

I know that I have been told that 4X4's didn't come with a big block. I have had my eye on a 72 stepside 4X4 sitting along side a barn in the country for awhile now. I finally stopped to look at it. Its a 72 cheyenne10 4X4 stepside. Looks original it has air and a tilt column and when I poped the hood low and behold there was a big block under the hood. I could not open the door to check the blove box for info as the doors were locked. It sure looks orginal though. You all know I will be back to try and get the truck when someones around. could it be orginal? thanks Rick

Highly unlikely it is original. Far as i know, GM never made one.

Re: 72 cheyenne10 4X4 BIG BLOCK?

More than likely the truck came from a dealer in Chico, calif (king Chevrolet) I know the did alot of modification to the trucks they sold to the local farmers around this area. I am dying to look at the glove box door!!!! Who ever then put the big block in sure made it look orginal!

Re: 72 cheyenne10 4X4 BIG BLOCK?

Actually...No Big Blocks until at least 1982 or 1983...No Big Block 4wds ever in the 70's. They did do T-400's in 4wd's starting in 77/78 but always behind a 350 or 400 small block.

Now a lot of swaps took place especially after 73 because the motor mount perches were the same for Big or small and a lot more manuvering room. My dad had a 73 4wd 3/4T and bought a 74 2wd with Big Block just do the swap. Very clean swap other than the 454 was in front of a T350...All I can say is the Tranny shop really like our swap cause we ate a 350 about once a year until he sold it...

Opening the hood on someone else's truck with owner not around? Watch out for buckshot.

Re: 72 cheyenne10 4X4 BIG BLOCK?

Is the rest of the truck left alone or has it been played with it?I`ve seen it and done it...swap a motor and intentionally make it look like original.I built that`68 shortbed to look like a big block 50th Anniversary. It had a hi-per 454,but I put all the `68 396 stuff on it to look stock.I painted the Edelbrock manifold orange and everything.
