early '90s 454 and turbo 400
i posted this in the engine forum but didnt get much help so ill try here. i found a 454 and turbo 400 in a early '90s dually. i can get the motor, trans, radiator'and all the accesories for $800. it runs good and no smoke. my question is what kind of power will this give me? i know it wont have the power of the older 454's but will it be a fun to drive motor in a weekend street truck? i would probably put a small cam in it just for sound other than that i dont want to spend a lot of money on it. thanks for any help.

The factory rated the 454 in the early 90's with 230hp and 385 ft/lbs of torque. The CR, cam and heads are limiting the HP on those engines.

would this be a good motor to start with? torque is what really matters right? thats not a bad torque number for that low horsepower.

That's down low torque. I remember the early 90's and people were quite pleased with the 454 fi power.

Re: early '90s 454 and turbo 400
I'd guess that 454 would have the peanut port heads. Not great for rpm, but low end torque is ok. You could always change heads later if you want.
For $800 with trans & extras, I'd get it.
