Bought a new compressor - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Well, I bit the bullet and bought a new compressor. I got an Ingersol Rand 80 gal 5 hp compressor. It has an 18.5 flow rate at 90 psi, and it should keep up with my air tools, the little craftsman I have had no way of keeping up, I would only get about 30 sec of good air pressure, and had to stop and wait for it to pump back up. I now need to get it wired in and I'll be set. I sure wish I had taken some electrical classes, the 220 wiring is beyond my electrical know-how. It sure was fun getting the thing unloaded from the 4x4 truck, I had to call for some help, and used the assistance of a cherry picker.

This is a pic I found of the same compressor I bought, mine is not hooked up yet. My garage is much more cluttered tahn this pic. So you get the idea. It's a single phase. I'm doing some research on bolt down, and running hard lines, seems pretty complicated, it's not just a plug and play.

I got it wired and set, that thing is heavy. I was a chore to get it set on studs and bushings. I works great, I had my cut off wheel running, the compressor kicked on and was building pressure while the tool was running, it was great.

Don't know how you are going to set yours up but FYI there is a small brass three outlet part you can get for this. You can put 3 quick disconnects on it. That way, if you are using hose you can have several different hoses with tools and not have to change back and forth..

I'm still working on all of that. That fitting is now on the list as well as converting all the couplings form 1/4 to 3/8.

Probably a good question, but I thought that when painting the fittings should be 3/8, I presume the change won't hurt air tools. or am I wrong again.

You don't have to change them. You have a good size comp. your volumn will be sufficient to do what you will want to do. When you are painting you will be regulating your pressure down anyway. your 1/4" Lines will be fine. Your set up will not be covering long distances and you won't have any pressure drop.
For your needs, it will be a matter of choice. If everything you have is 3/8th fillings, go with it.

You likely wont need that 3/8 but there may come time. What I did was plumb my shop with a lot of drops with 1/4 quick connect fittings and I made one drop dedicated with 3/8 quick connect for those times I need to break out the 1" drive impact.

That is nice, and for it's size I bet it's still quieter than those dang oil less pieces of scrap.

I actually dug an old Craftsman compressor out of a scrap pile just because it had the seperate motor and jug. That way if the motor goes out I'll replace it, same with the jug.

Thanks for the info, ya'll just saved me some more money. (sure makes paying membership dues easier). This compressor is great, nice and quiet. My old one was a craftsman oil less and was so loud you needed to wear ear protection. I still need to do something about moisture in the fuel lines. Any cheap solutions??

you may not want to plumb your shop but you might want to consider at least 1 line that goes several feet away from compressor with elbow and go all the way up to the ceiling and drop it back down,. On the leg back down make a T with the water trap coming off the T and another 12" or so going strait down with a petcock terminating it. What ever you do , dont put your water trap next to your compressor or it wont do any good.

That's a nice set up. You are right this is not a plug in and play. IMHO I would get an installation permit from city hall just in case there is a problem down the road you do not want extra problem's with your insurance company. I know your dad is qualified matters not if a problem arises, when the permit is signed off by the inspector your home free. You should have your own control box for the compressor [it's own breaker box] as well as your main one for the house. All my air lines are in the wall as this prevents paint dust etc. settleing on them and crap getting in the air when your using air tools. I attached some pictures of my install.

I will do all the lines and better set-up when I get my shop built and move it there, for now it is bolted to the floor in the garage and plugged into the hose reel. Nothing that can't be un-done when the garage gets converted to a den. But I gotta build a shop first, that brings up a whole bunch of other questions, like pole barn? frame built? or steel? and how big to go, space is not an issue, I have 5 acres, and.......I don't really know where to start, and I'm on a very tight budget so most of the work will be done by me.
