Re: Big Block
Nope but close, big block trucks had 400 badges and a 402 is a .030 over 396. 400 is actually a small block but if i'm not mistaken they did not come in these years but like I said the 396 and 402 and a badge on the fender that read 400.

Re: Big Block
The 396 big blocks were just that. Story has it that a warehouse of them was flooded, and to save all the blocks, they were bored out .030 over, and used. That made them a 402. In the cars, they were labeled as a 400. In the trucks, I have seen then badged as a 400, and as a 396.

Re: Big Block
in 68 and 69, you could get the 396
starting in 70, there were no 396 big blocks being made. They were 402cid. It is nothing but a 396 bored .030 over. Many storys have been said, but the one I personally believe, is inner office politics. in 1970, they introduced the 400 small block. The brass didn't want the small block to be bigger than there big block, so they increased the CID of the small big block from 396 to 402. In the perfomance cars, they were called 396 becouse that engine already made a name for its self. I have no idea why they called it a 400 in family cars and in trucks, but they did, and many of the SPIDS were marked 396 even though the badge said 400 and the engine was actually a 402. So; 67- no big block 68- 396 69- 396 with badges saying 396 70- 402 badged as a 400 71- 402 badged as a 400 72- 402 badged as a 400 No 454s ever offered in 67 - 72, and no 400 small blocks either. |
