Re: Cowl hoods- lets see 'em!

Nice work on that custom cowl... How hard is fabbing something like that? What type of sheet bender do you have, ect?

I would love to make my own sometime in the future

Re: Cowl hoods- lets see 'em!

1bad chevy,
Yes I made mine. I still need to do alittle dolly work on it and get it primed. I just didn't like the 2" cowls everyone was selling.

chevy71blu,
There was no bender involved! A cut off wheel, welder, some 16 gauge sheet metal and some well placed cuts in the body line.

no bender used here either i took and measured out 12 inches from center body line on each side and made a 24 inch slice from front to back then lifted the center after you detache the back then take two strips of sheet metal to your desired height and tack weld them in from front to back and slice the body line were needed to get the bend and height you want then trim off the extra and the rest is finish bodywork
sick 69 i didn't like the price for what it cost to fab my own lol and i must say it has got alot of talk everyone that see's it ask where did you get it i have never seen one like that then i say i made it and they ask for one

how much approxmiately time and money did you have in fabbing one? just wondering if it'd be more time/cost efficent to buying one

Re: Cowl hoods- lets see 'em!

I have about 4 hours into mine at this point and probably another four to have it ready for paint. So a full 8 hours is a realistic time frame.

You also have to factor in,,,I enjoy spending the time building it instead of buying it. In some cases buying would be worth it instead of fabbing though. It all comes down to what you want to do and can afford.

Re: Cowl hoods- lets see 'em!

It's great doing something yourself and people asking you about it! But for the most part you would have to price it so high it wouldn't be worth buying since you hand build them. Not knocking your hood because it looks great just saying most would be scared of the asking price if they had to pay for all the labor you put into just one hood.
I run into this all the time with the Golfcarts I build people love them but when they here a price it's a differant story!

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

71 Dragtruck Let Us Know How Much The Hood Weighs When Yours Come In. Us Body Source Has Their Lift Off 4" Hoods On Sale Now, I Was Thinking Of Going That Way Or The Harwood Depending On Weight. The East Coast Customs Hood Looks Good Also, Any Idea How Much It Weighed.

Will do, it will be at least 2 weeks, I'm in no hurry so went with the cheapest shipping. I have a feeling that I'm not going to save much in the weight department with a bolt on style, but prefer it over a full pin on, I'm going with the light springs and pins in the front. If anyone has a steel hood laying around it would be great if you'd be willing to weigh it.
