Water pump question on BBC

I was wondering if a Long Water Pump would work on a BBC with 72 style mounts on our trucks? I figured shorts came with the truck but i was wondering if i would run into clearance problems with a long pump.

Thanks for any input

Re: Water pump question on BBC

I dont think it will. I have a bbc with a long water pump in my 69 with the tubular motor mounts and I have shifted the engine back 1 in and I barely have enough room for my electric fan.

Re: Water pump question on BBC

I re-sold a serpentine belt setup since it put the wp hub too close to the radiator. I would have had to pull the rad to get the pulley off.

Re: Water pump question on BBC

You will have about 2 3/4" of space between the pully and the rad.
I can't find a electric with less than 2 3/4" depth. I have a 16" flex fan and 2 electric in front pushing. 12" and a 14" fan in front of the air-condenser. In traffic it starts to climb to about 220 degrees. If the outside temp are in the 60's it will stay below 210. I am thinking of maybe side drafting electrics on angles and blow on the inner fenders. The 2 3/4 is the water pump pulley, the air conditioner compressor sticks out further.

Re: Water pump question on BBC

LWP will not work on a big block truck with the mounts in the bbc position.

You shouldn't have any overheating problems with a 4 core and a dual electric fans with a SWP. If you do, something isn't right.

I have a 509" with a 4 core $200 radiator in it, and a derale dual electric fan. 180 degrees...period. I have an auxillary cooler for my trans, trans loop is Trans->Auxillary->Radiator-> External Filter-> Trans. If you have a built trans going into the radiator first...it will get too hot.

hope this helps.

Re: Water pump question on BBC

Long water pump on BB in stock location does fit on mine. I come up with the same measurment as dwaite72lnghrn. I just went searching for a clutch fan that was the right length and found one that leaves the fan about 3/4 inches clearence from rad. I dont like it that close though and there is a little overheating issues when using ac in slow traffic. I plan on changing to electric fans. You likely wont find an electric fan that would have the clearance to sit in the middle of the rad, but using 2 side by side will work and that is my plan when I get around to it.

Re: Water pump question on BBC

Anyone have any idea what the difference will be in rad clearance between a SWP and LWP? I have a 5600 cfm flexalite dual electric setup that just wont quite clear with my Edelbrock victor series LWP.
