Question Changing Gear Ratio's

My 70 k-10 has a 4:10 rear,my parts truck has a 3:73 rear.Has anyone changed gear ratios without changing out the whole rearend? I was reading the overhaul manual where it said the original shims are cast and cannot be reinstalled for fear of breaking or cracking them.Where can you buy the steel shims to do this change over and is it a easy swap or a pain in the a$$ ?

4.10 was not avaialble on K-10, maybe you mean K20 ?
3,73 and 3.07 is all was availaable in 67-72 K series 1/2 ton

4,11 could be had on 1/2 ton 2wd C10 thoguh, but is verrrrrryyyy rare to find, only one person or possibly maybe two n this whole forum have a 12 bolt half ton with actual 4.11 in it and is listed on glovebox like it should be if was original
good luck

I have found that service manuals can be a great help if your unsure of what's involved. Shims can be found at a GM dealer or through a driveline shop. Randy's Ring and Pinion, National Drivetrain, and others should be able to help you out. Many 4x4 outfits could help you also. Here's a few links I had handy.

It is possible to reuse the cast iron shim, but getting the new one is the right way.
