The good/the bad/the ugly....need transmission recommendations

The good: Finished getting the motor in yesterday. Runs like a scalded dog.
The bad: The tranny started slipping after about 10 miles.
The ugly: Tranny is shot after 20 miles.

This is just my luck. Four months to get this beast built and the tranny goes after 20 miles. 20 miles?!? I didn't even have time to get on it good. I knew this would happen but figured it'd at least last a couple of months. Anyways, I need a new tranny, one that can handle ~500 hp right now, and potentially more in case I ever decide to spray it. I can get this one http://www.rosslertrans.com/Th350%20...OMPETITION.htm that will handle it, but the price is up there (~1500 after everything is said and done). TCI is about 1700, but I don't think it's as good as the Rossler. Any other recommendations out there?

Re: The good/the bad/the ugly....need transmission recommendations

I've been building a 454 to make 500 at the crank (numbers wise anyhow) and was told/so I bought, a 400 tranny. I figure picking up a cheap one and then spending 5-800 getting it rebuilt is the way to go. By the time I get to it, it'll probably cost a grand but I at least have the tranny!

You know that brings up another question which I'm sure has been asked a million times: should I stick with the 350 or ?

If you decide to get this one make sure they replace the steels (in the clutch packs).
Personally I'd feel much better with a 400.

Re: The good/the bad/the ugly....need transmission recommendations

Simple answer - with that much power - T400 is the way to go. Mine was built with all the good stuff - and is good for up to 800 hp - get a good converter and replace the Ujoints while you've got the shaft out and the last piece you'll have to replace is the rear end...

Good Luck

TH400's certainly are beefier than the TH350, but they also get a little poorer gas mileage. But unless this is your daily driver, MPG isn't a big concern.

Either tranny can be built to handle your HP/TQ requirements, but the TH400 will have a little more safety factor built in should you decide to spray it later. The TH400 has another advantage, and that's a larger output spline and U-joint that's less likely to fail on you.

However, a friend of mine has a TH350 behind a potent 396/402 and it's holding up just fine.

I'd say, if you can buy a really beefy TH400 for less than $1000, then go for it. If not, find a good TH400 core for $100 or so and put $600 to $800 of parts in it yourself.

Monster and Art Carr are some others who I hear build beefy transmissions but I've never used either.
