Re: the metal thats behind kick panel
If what your looking at in side the cab is rusty , that is the kick panal. Their is a replacement panal for that.It is abot 9'' high and fits to the floor. You will have to cut it out to weld in the new one. it is spot welded alone the door flange and also to the a piller in the center of the panal and to the floor . hope this helped.

Re: the metal thats behind kick panel
Not to be the bearer of bad news, but if the inside of the kick panel is that is rusty, there probably is more in the door pillar as well as the rocker. I thought that was all I had as well.

Yeah, I when I hear people say "it only needs rockers" I always think "wait until you get it off..."

Re: the metal thats behind kick panel
Been there done that a few times. raggedjim you could not have said it better. Even if the rocker looks good, it aint, to do it right your going to replace the bottom of the pillar and a piece of the inner rocker and a piece of the floorboard as well as the bottom piece of kick panel. I would only cut out what you need to!!! fit the replacement pieces buy cutting them to what you've removed. Replacement rockers need to be fit also. to make it nice you may want- need sand blaster, all 3 welders Tig/Mig and a resistance welder to give it the factory spot weld look. I coated all the back sides of my work with panel bond adheisive, should last well longer than me. I'll post some pictures in a day or so to show you what I'm talking about. OH and my first and second trucks were 70 GMC's cool trucks JOHN

Re: the metal thats behind kick panel
Just a few more of the repair areas. I coated all the bare metal under and behind the rocker literally gluing the rocker on prior to spot welding making this job permanent never to rust again. Also notice how I fit the cab corners to the rockers by pie cutting them and welding them back together for that finished look!! John

Re: the metal thats behind kick panel
They are the original cab corners. It was easyer and a much better job to cut and fit the cab coner than to modify the rocker. Also the natural curve of the body line made it necessary. The kick panel replacement was heavier than stock material, also was the pillar and rockers. No its not easy to do but it is fun and for someone like me that wants 0 rust and a restoration that will look good for a long time its well worth the effort. Once I have the entire cab media blasted you will be able to see the very clean and neat job that was done. I know it looks messy now. I'll post some pics then.

Re: the metal thats behind kick panel
well if you dont know how to weld then this aint a good place to pratice
my first weld was welding a go-cart floor back to the frame when i was 13 my 2nd weld was welding half the floor back in my truck abour 2 months ago and i still havet got the hang of it yet...so welding aint something you learn to do overnite but if you think you can do it then go for it |
