another guy with carb problems

ok so as some of you guys on this side of the board know, i just picked up a 72 gmc c10. well after replacing the plugs, wires, and adjusting the timing it runs kinda ok. but she doesn't wanna start/run very well when the choke is closed when its cold(it has the stock 2 jet r-chester). but once she warms up she runs pretty good, but if i am at a stop she has the tendency to hesitate, even stall if i don't floor it. so what could be my problem besides the fuel filter. i'm planing on changing the intake to an edelbrock performer rpm and carter afb 600cfm. also will an hei dizzy fit on a 307(at least i think it's a 307 because of the head casting mark)?

I had a similair problem on my 69 GMC witha q-jet.

I sprayed my choke mechanism with penetrating oil and blew it off and it sure helped. I think 20 years of dust was making the choke stick, both open and closed!

I imagine your problem is more, but it may be a place to start.

well i don't have a problem with it sticking, i just doesn't like to run with the choke closed when cold.

Assuming the plug wires all went back on correctly, and that it's not bad ignition module (if it's HEI, bad points if it's not)

Then my vote is it's fuel/carb related and then it sounds to me like one or several of the following:

IF YOU'RE NOT GETTING BLACK SMOKE OUT THE TAILPIPES WHEN COLD:

Vacuum leak (makes it run leaner than it should which is more noticeable when it's cold)

Float/fuel level too low inside the carb (leans the air/fuel mixture)

Idle mixture screws screwed in too far

Auto Choke not set rich enough.

IF YOU ARE GETTING BLACK SMOKE OUT BACK WHEN IT'S COLD

Float level too high or needle/seat stuck open slightly

Choke set too strong

Idle mixture screws not screwed in far enough

Fast idle cam on the carb not set high enough

At least its a start for places to look.

For the cost of a beer and a few gaskets, you could try bolting on a buddy's carb for a short while just to see if the problem goes away.

Have you checked the choke pulloff. When you start it up cold the choke vacuum chamber should pull the choke about halfway open. After it runs awhile the heat on the choke coil should open the choke straight up. If you were going to continue using that carb I would recomend putting a kit in it but you may get by with adjustments. Any chev V-8 HEI will fit. It,s a good idea to go through it & make shure the advance mechs are working. There are kits to rebuild them & to taylor the advance.

IMHO thats allot of intake, Edelbrock suggests a 1405 or a 1407 carb to meet the demands of it, and works well on an engine that is a serious street/strip weekend performer, [read not good on gas likes to gulp.] Have you thought of a regular performer intake with a 1406 carb. This combination is for an engine that has a bit of a cam nothing too serious, for the owner that wants good gas mileage and over all good performance. This set up performs well on stock engines also.

well i didn't pay for either the carb or the manifold off of ebay. during one of my local junk yard runs, like just out side of the base's main gate local(so nice), i found an 1980 chevy 1 ton truck that i robbed the carb, which is a carter afb, an edelbrock performer intake manifold, and hei dizzy. all to the tune of $70 i might add. i think that i robbed them blind. so now i know what i am doing for my thanksgiving!!

I was wondering if you already owned your carb. and manifold. This combination may run great just have to wait and see.
