Question So what does a kerfaggled converter do?

OK I'm being a smart-ass but as usual I have a question from somebody else's question. What are the signs of a messed up torque converter? I'm going to be getting ahold of a truck on Sunday that apparently works alright except for the converter and I'd like to know for myself. Thanks

Greg

(BTW the guy I'm buying it from is trustworthy and has asked around some of his mechanic freinds to find out what's wrong with his truck.)

If it's totally shot, it'll just sit there and rev, no matter what gear it's in. It'll still have park, but no forward or reverse gear.

If it's on it's way out, it might vibrate ALOT at certain engine speeds.

Heh...sorry. Had to "borrow" it since it's a good one. You can have it back now, if you'd like....

Thanks for the replies BTW. I think the trouble the owner is having is that the engine pretty much won't run. It'll turn over but I guess the converter bogs it down? Does this sound possible? I'm being a little pre-mature in asking questions when I haven't even played with it myself but I thought I'd ask and see if this sounds like something typical...

Many thanks,

Greg

Unbolt the 3 verter bolts and push it rearward, that will delete the tranny from the 'won't start' trouble.

Look at the flywheel, you'll see bolts holding on the verter. Just unbolt them. You'll have to bump the motor over to get to all of them, but you can do it in less than 5 min once you have your 9/16's socket and same size open/box wrench.

that doesn't sound bad at all. Hopefully the weather will improve in the next week and I can give this a shot, thanks. Are converters fairly easy to remove? Sorry for all the obviously new guy q's ut I've gotta start somewhere, right?

Thanks again,

Greg

Pulling a vertr sounds easier then it really is.
Drop the drive shaft, unbolt tranny mount, unbolt tranny from engine, slide back and verter will pop out of tranny by pulling on it...same work as dropping tranny.
Sounds easy, but it is a b!tch in reality.

Thanks for all these fast replies. Obviously the next questions you guys are going to see from me are "how do I remove my trans" and the like. When I saw that Haynes wouldn't even put that in their manual I started to wonder what I'm getting myself into.

Thanks again,

Greg

Actually, from what i understand, only the manual shift trucks were rivited in.
All 3 of mine were bolted, but they had all had the trannys pulled at one time or another.
