Smile heating & cooling shop ????'s

shop is 30x30. 2 turbines on top of roof, ceiling is open, have not insulated the walls either. Climate is east Texas. Jan-march cold march to may ok
may to septemberish hot, oct-jan back to cold to colder. I got to do
something. I got fans. for the summer. But nothing big. My buddy bought
an attic fan and built a frame around it for summer. And some have heat
pumps, window units, woodburning stoves and on and on. Lots of u have
made your decisions. What did yall do. I going to do something and I'm
leaning towards the heat pump. Factor in that the heat doesn't me like
the cold. I mean high 40's down and I just come on back inside(don't u
northern dudes start laughing). Thanks for any views.

Re: heating & cooling shop ????'s

I have 2 electric heaters in my garage that struggle to keep things marm enough for my 24X30 garage. I have an LB White propane heater that will do it if it gets real cold. I have a big squirrel cage fan for the summer.

Fine, I won't start laughing.

We (now only my dad) heat the garage with a ceiling mounted natural gas furnace thingy. Turn it on 1/2 hour before working and we keep it at 50-55 deg while out there.

Re: heating & cooling shop ????'s

shop 30X56. Insulated walls and roof, no ceiling.
Heat: 100,000btu overhead gas catalytic heater, adequate for winter. Real efficient heat & fuel use.
Big Swamp cooler on wheels for summer. Swamp cooler probably no good for your area, tho.
Our winters are probably colder, summer about same, but low humidity.

I have a 24x30. Spray-in industrial insulation.

Small electric heater, but I hardly ever need it.
AC/ open up two doors and turn on the barrel fan.

Some day I may get a portable AC, but so far I have not seen the need for it.

Re: heating & cooling shop ????'s

Heh, my "shop" isn't even fully enclosed. Working out there when it's -40 outside means it's -40 inside as well. Only advantage to being inside is you're out of the wind and nothing has snow on it.

Re: heating & cooling shop ????'s

Yeah the ceiling is where I'm losing it. If it was enclosed it would be 10 foot.
And I have no insulation in the rafters. ok. thanks for the info.

Re: heating & cooling shop ????'s

I've got a 24X38 with no insulation. I use two convection kerosene
heaters in the winter to maintain a reasonable temp. When it's really cold and I REALLY want to work in the shop, I'll fire-up one of those jet motor type kerosene heaters to bust the cold and then the convection type to maintain. In the Summer I've a couple of big fans. The shop faces north, but I've roll-up doors on both the front and back, so I can get a thru breeze. The kerosene convection heaters run about 4 hours on a gallon.

Re: heating & cooling shop ????'s

My garage is 18'x24'.I got a forced hot air furnace out of a mobile home for $20. I got an old diesel tank from a truck and fill it with diesel or home heating oil.It keeps it toasty no matter how cold it gets. (-10) I've been using it for 10 years now with no problems. Chris

Re: heating & cooling shop ????'s

I have a 1200 sq.ft. shop attached to my house. The house has forced air but the shop has hot water heat in the floor fired by a small boiler. Once the slab is warm the whole floor becomes a huge heat radiator. I set it at about 68 F. and leave it. I figure if I have to lay on the floor I might as well be warm. For summer the shop is always cool as I insulated it like crazy. Keeps things cool in the summer time and toasty in the winter. My shop door's are insulated as well and have a R16 rating as this is a place that a shop looses allot of heat through. Insulation is cheap and pays back dividends like crazy.

esll.

Picture of boiler, this sucker is cheap, cheap to use.
